Like that double-sided Beatles hit, however, this single showed that Clarke and Moyet were drifting apart musically, with one side a soulful, downcast ballad and the other a thumping dance club anthem. Clarke and Moyet alternate songwriting credits on the album and while both contribute gripping tunes, the results are somewhat schizophrenic when taken as a whole. It was not altogether surprising when the duo split upon the album's release, Moyet to a solo career and Clarke to form Erasure.
Almost the equal of their influential debut UPSTAIRS AT ERIC'S, Yaz's second and final album, 1983's YOU AND ME BOTH, is a strong collection of diverse songs. The duo of ex-Depeche Mode songwriter Vince Clarke and formidable R&B singer Alison Moyet had scored three classic singles off their debut, and they trumped them all with this album's great double-sided hit "Nobody's Diary" and "State Farm," the synthpop equivalent of "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane."

The Electric Light Orchestra was in a precarious position by 1981. Not only was Jeff Lynne's brand of immaculately produced Beatlesque pop out of critical fashion in those new-wave days, there was a new brand of video-friendly bubblegum on the rise that ...

| | Kosheen Damage CD (2007)
You And Me Both music CDs
$15.15 Four years after their last record, the guitar-driven Kokopelli, British trio Kosheen returned to the scene with their third album, Damage. On it, they attempt to bridge the drum'n'bass/electronica of their early work with the rock they explored in Kokopelli, ending up with something that, while not exactly satisfying, is successful in displaying the talents and influences of each member while still retaining the band's cleanly produced, hooky sound. Lyricist and singer Sian Evans approaches the songs from a pop standpoint, so there are clear delineations between verse and chorus, so even when things began to feel samey -- and they definitely do: there are only so many possible variations on the same basic minor chords -- there are enough catchy lines to keep the album from dragging because of it. The length -- over 80 minutes -- in fact, works as more of a hindrance to Damage than the actual pieces. It's just a little too much, a little too long, a ...

$22.35 | | Deltron 3030 CD (2000)
You And Me Both songs
$13.15 New to this reissue are three remixes, two of "Positive Contact" (by industrial producer Charlie Clouser and Madric C), and one of "Turbulence." While the latter is a less invigorating LP cut, its reworking is the real bonus treat, given Mark Bell's luminary status as an original member of IDM legends LFO.
Arguably the most innovative and engaging indie hip-hop record of its era, DELTRON 3030 is like BLADE RUNNER set to beats. The core trio of Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Kid Koala were the architects of an LP whose leading concept was as dense as its music was retro-futuristically engaging. DELTRON is a thesis in old-school hip-hop storytelling/beat manufacturing, cross-referenced with an intellectual sense of humor about the genre's future and a correspondingly ominous soundtrack provided by Automator.
The heir apparent to eccentric production wizard Prince Paul, Dan the Automator's left-field conceptual brilliance rapidly made him a hero to underground hip-hop fans. For the Deltron 3030 project, he teamed up with like-minded MC Del tha Funkee Homosapien and turntablist Kid Koala, both cult favorites with a similarly goofy sense of humor. Deltron 3030's self-titled debut is exactly what you might expect from such a teaming: a wildly imaginative, unabashedly geeky concept album about interplanetary rap warriors battling to restore humanity's hip-hop supremacy in a corporate-dominated dystopia (or something like that). It's difficult to follow the concept all the way through, but it hardly matters, because Deltron 3030 is some of the best work both Del and Dan have ever done. In fact, it's the Automator's most fully realized production effort to date, filled with sumptuous, densely layered soundscapes that draw on his classical background and, appropriately, often resemble a film score. For his part, Del's performance here revitalized his reputation, thanks to some of his best, most ...
