(2 Customer Reviews)
In the '70s, west coast singer-songwriters such as Jackson Browne, Lindsay Buckingham, and the Eagles were releasing smooth tunes that seemed to inhabit the laid back demeanor of their locale. Zevon sprang up like a wild card, a thrilling combination of gun-toting maniac, well read intellectual, piano-pounding rocker, and unashamedly romantic balladeer. That he was the toughest of his breed was inarguable. That he might drink himself into oblivion was a distinct possibility.
MUTINEER is a comeback of sorts. It was released after something of a delay and is arguably stronger than anything he's done since the late '80s. The sound is more robust, with fuller production and instrumentation augmenting Zevon's baritone. The tipsy-turvy carnival feel of "Something Bad Happened To A Clown" will either enthrall or alienate, depending on your view of carnivals. Long time fans will be relieved when the vintage Zevon lurks and keeps his eyes peeled for intruders on "Rottweiler Blues," a lean rocker draped with paranoid humor and violence. The spare "Piano Fighter" is similarly straightforward. The real highlight, however, is the ballad "The Indifference of Heaven," which resonates equally with beauty, isolation, and defeat.

$5.99 Zevon actually released a record prior to his celebrated self-titled "debut," a record so bad that he took to touring with the Everly Brothers. Whatever he did on the road with them paid off. He returned to recording with bone-rattling West Coast tales of prostitutes, heroin addicts, outlaws and suicidal bar hoppers. Thus, Zevon went, with one record, from playing ...

| | Warren Zevon Transverse City CD (1989) Remastered
Mutineer
$10.19 Released in 1987, Sentimental Hygiene rescued Warren Zevon from record industry limbo and returned him to major-label status, but rather than return to the rough-and-ready sound of that album, he used his new corporate patronage to finance a significantly grander and darker project, 1989's Transverse City. The album features an impressive array of guest stars -- including Jerry Garcia, David Gilmour, Neil Young, Jack Casady, Jorma Kaukonen, and Benmont Tench -- but while its surface is as glossy as the albums Zevon created when he was the darling of the L.A. Mellow Mafia, the tone is as grim as anything the man ever created. Transverse City is a song cycle ...

Mutineer
$9.99 West Coast based songwriter Warren Zevon emerged from middling activity and high-strung excess with SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE, his strongest record in years. The album zooms with renewed vigor, well placed cameos, and Zevon's trademark mix of black humor and heartache. Things kick off with the chugging title track, highlighted by a stinging solo from fellow iconoclast Neil Young. Zevon then turns his chronicler's eye towards the boxing ring with the gripping "Boom Boom Mancini."
From there it's Springsteen territory "Working at the Factory" with Bob Dylan supplying the harmonica breaks. R.E.M. turns ...

$10.39 While moderation was never Warren Zevon's strong suit, his efforts to clean himself up in the early '80s resulted in two of his finest albums, 1980's literate but corrosive Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School and the following year's explosive live ...
