Clay Walker is a young Texan with a solid country voice, and on this disc, he's attracted some of that city's best songwriters/arrangers--Tim Mensy and Zack Turner to name a couple. The results are evident in tunes like "One Two I Love You," and "That's Us," a pretty ballad about two lovers whose stark differences are the very things that keep them together.
This is an easy disc to listen to, thanks to top-notch playing throughout and a good mix of up-tempo country shuffles and pleasant slower numbers. True to country form, there are stories in these songs: "Then What" has Walker asking a good friend about the wages of fooling around. Walker even experiments with an island feel in this tune, with steel drums providing a surprising change of pace.

Having previously combined Gene Watson's first and third albums (1975's Love in the Hot Afternoon and 1977's Paper Rosie) onto one CD, the Hux label paired the moderately popular honky tonk singer's second and fourth albums (1976's Because You Believe in Me and 1978's Beautiful Country) onto one disc for this release. Because You Believe in Me featured a Top 20 hit in the title track, and a considerably smaller one in "Her Body Couldn't Keep You Off My Mind," whose title is rather more memorable than its tune. These actually aren't the highlights of what's a pretty solid (if slightly laid-back) honky tonk record, with little in the way of slickness beyond the maudlin orchestration of "Because You Believed in Me" itself, and plenty in the way of heartfelt, straight-ahead vocal delivery. Larry Gatlin's "Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall" in particular is an overlooked cut, veering a little close to the kind of balladry more associated with Southern deep soul than country. There's lots of variety, however, from the peppy fiddle'n'steel-driven shuffle "When My World Left Town" and the barroom boogie-inflected "Sorry Willie" to "Hey Louella," which is as close as the material gets to honky tonk stomp. ...

James Talley's 1975 debut for the Capitol label was perhaps unnoticed by the country music establishment, deemed not sophisticated enough and too inside the hillbilly tradition for the outlaws; nonetheless, it is an unqualified artistic achievement. Featuring 12 of his own songs, this album of Talley's music comes from the rural country blues and from Bob Wills' Western swing, and his songs are rooted in the everyday lives of folks, whether working-class or living in poverty, who make the best of difficult situations without too much complaining. The title track, with its blues riffing and sweet hillbilly abandon, tells the story of a woman loved enough to break a man without malice because she loves him too.
