There is an interesting contrast on this 94-minute double-disc live album (recorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon in July 1983) between the music, much of which is slow and moody, with Mark Knopfler's muttered vocals and large helpings of his fingerpicking on what sounds like an amplified Spanish guitar, and the audience response. The arena-size crowd cheers wildly, and claps and sings along when given half a chance, as though each song were an up-tempo rocker. When they do have a song of even medium speed, such as "Sultans of Swing" or "Solid Rock," they are in ecstasy. That Dire Straits' introspective music loses much of its detail in a live setting matters less than that it gains presence and a sense of anticipation. Alan Clark's keyboards help to fill out the sound and give Knopfler's spare melodies a certain majesty, but Dire Straits remains an overgrown bar band with a Bob Dylan fixation, and that's exactly how the crowd likes it. (The CD version of the album contains one extra track, "Expresso Love," which adds a needed change of pace to the otherwise slow-moving first disc). ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded in July 1983.

Q (7/96, p.141) - 3 Stars - Good - "...admirably recorded...gruelling world tour and Knopfler's theme from Local Hero added to the set..." PROMISE, Sade's 1985 follow-up to her phenomenally successful debut, has the same breezy, sophisticated R&B approach as DIAMOND LIFE, sounding like a cross between light jazz and a low-key nightclub set of torch songs. Sade's detached, ...

| | Phil Manzanera Listen Now CD (1977) (Import) United Kingdom
Alchemy: Dire Straits Live album
$7.49 LISTEN NOW is the 1977 solo album from Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera.
This digitally remastered CD has 12 songs, including three bonus tracks.
Phil Manzanera had no problem filling his mid-'70s downtime away from Roxy Music. His guitar graced some 20 albums, like John Cale's Fear, Eno's Here Come the Warm Jets, and Nico's The End. This outing from his all-star side group is slicker than his 1976 live debut album, but no less worthwhile; some 16 musicians are credited. The sound is sleek and sophisticated; even lyrics aren't exempt from creative twists, as shown on "Listen Now"'s glistening jazz-pop -- which cleverly juxtaposes its title against a bouncy "now, now, listen" chorus. The song also questions how people are living life in a repressive society, even as "Law and Order" ...

$12.69 The Marlowes are a four-piece rock & roll/power pop band from Providence, Rhode Island. The Marlowes' fourth full-length disc, Sugarbursts and Thunderbolts, was released on September 17, 2002 on Shiny Fly Records. The new CD features the tracks "If You Wouldn't Mind," "In Spite of Everything" and the infectious first single and lead-off track, "Because of a Girl," which has already been added to the playlists of college and commercial stations throughout the world. The Marlowes' last album, Nuclear Suitcase, was released on Shiny Fly Records in 2000 and made several critic's "Best Of the Year" lists, received a glowing review in Rolling Stone (Germany) and was voted by the listener's of Spain's influential TELEMADRID RADIO 101.3 /106 FM as the best indie album of the year. After recording their debut 7" single, "Shanghaied" b/w "Wink," on Silent Wing Records in late 1994, the band released their first full-length CD, Andrea's Sidewalk on Red Eye Records in November of 1995. The album's accessible, melodically-charged tunes enabled the Marlowes to receive their first significant national exposure via radio, touring and mounds of favorable press. The band's next release, 1998's Same Dog Barks, was also blessed with enthusiastic reviews and sales as well as significant airplay in France, Brazil, Japan, Australia and Spain. The Marlowes also played at the influential International Pop Overthrow Festival in Los Angeles in August of 1998 at the storied El Rey Theater on a bill that included Velvet Crush, the Tories and John Faye of the Caulfields. Alchemy: Dire Straits Live music CDs
$20.99 The Pernice Brothers spent much of 2004 on the road. With no new album in the foreseeable future, the band figured a live album would be a good way to keep the Pernice-loving masses satisfied, and they were right. Compiled from two shows recorded in January 2004 at New York City's Mercury Lounge, Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening is a stunningly recorded document of the group's live show. Joe Pernice's vocals are note-perfect and wringing with emotion; at one point he jokes to the crowd that he is giving himself an aneurysm. The band is tight, loud, and dynamic throughout -- all the things you want your power pop combos to be. A large number of the 12 songs come from the band's first album, Overcome By Happiness, and it is fascinating to hear the live band's slightly grittier take on pristine chamber pop treasures like "Clear Spot," "Crestfallen," and "Monkey Suit." The songs taken from World Won't ...
