Depeche Mode: Martin Gore (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); David Gahan (vocals); Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder (keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals). Producers: Depeche Mode, George Jones, Daniel Miller. Recorded at Music Works, London, England and Hansa Mischraum, Berlin, Germany. Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan, Alan Wilder, Martin L. Gore, Andy Fletcher. The peak of the band's industrial-gone-mainstream fusion, and still one of the best electronic music albums yet recorded, Some Great Reward still sounds great, with the band's ever-evolving musical and production skills matching even more ambitious songwriting from Martin Gore. "People Are People" appears here, but finds itself outclassed by some of Depeche Mode's undisputed classics, most especially the moody, beautiful "Somebody," a Gore-sung piano ballad that mixes its wit and emotion skillfully; "Master and Servant," an amped-up, slamming dance track that conflates sexual and economic politics to sharp effect; and the closing "Blasphemous Rumors," a slow-building anthemic number supporting one of Gore's most cynical lyrics, addressing a suicidal teen who finds God only to die soon afterward. Even lesser-known tracks like the low-key pulse of "Lie to Me" and the weirdly dreamy "It Doesn't Matter" showcase an increasingly confident band. Alan Wilder's arrangements veer from the big to the stripped down, but always with just the right touch, such as the crowd samples bubbling beneath "Somebody" or the call/response a cappella start to "Master and Servant." With Reward, David Gahan's singing style found the métier it was going to stick with for the next ten years, and while it's never gone down well with some ears, it still has a compelling edge to it that suits the material well. ~ Ned Raggett Depeche Mode's U.S. breakthrough album, 1984's SOME GREAT REWARD, expanded the U.K. synth band's American following from a small cult of Anglophiles to the same sort of teenage adulation that the Cure had started attracting around the same time. Featuring the Top 20 U.S. hit "People Are People," along with cult faves such as the intensely mopey "Blasphemous Rumours," the fashionably S&M-tinged "Master and Servant," and the disarmingly earnest love ballad "Somebody," this is the album on which Depeche Mode finally shed the stigma of founding songwriter Vince Clarke's departure. SOME GREAT REWARD finds Martin Gore coming into his own as a songwriter, with Alan Wilder taking Gore's place in the George Harrison role, adding two fine tunes of his own. The addition of mechanical factory noise to several songs, as well as the more introspective tones and more intricate constructions, aligned the band more with darker industrial bands than with sunny technopop groups. Meanwhile, Gahan's vocals started hinting at a deeper, moodier tint, foreshadowing the gloomier, more complex, more angular path that was to follow.
Q (7/95, p.139) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...confirmed Martin Gore as a talent of real depth, creating music that could be both experimental and icily catchy, while combining this with ominous lyrics that hinted at much more than Robert Smith's callow pronouncements..." Some Great Reward
$16.45 Juno award nominee, iParenting Award Winner (USA) and Parents' Choice Award (USA) Winner, Mary Lambert, is a family singer/songwriter/performer who currently resides in Kingston Ontario. Mary is a dazzling and dynamic addition to the Canadian children's music scene. Her wonderful voice and colourful performances are filled with infectious music, sheer energy and tons of audience participation. In the past ten years, Mary has toured and performed over 2000 shows at schools, music festivals and family focused events throughout Canada. We are pleased to announce that her new CDs, "Summer Fun" and "A 'Mary' Christmas" are hot off the presses. Her children's performance career began in Muskoka, ON, in 1993 when a good friend overheard her singing to her children at bedtime. Her career has since taken on two distinct identities. Mary has become known to thousands of children as "Peanut Butter" from the singing duo JAM SANDWICH. They produced their first cassette, full of traditional and well-known children's songs, entitled "Singin' Along" in May of 1997. Their 2nd collaborative project, "Play On" was ...
| | Blues Today Vol. 3-Blues Today CD (2006)
Some Great Reward
$13.69 BLUES BYTES Blues Today, Volume III is the third in a series of project albums from Arizona singer / songwriter Pete Thelen. The concept here is to gather groupings of Thelen's friends in the studio to record his original compositions. Like the previous collections, there is always at least one gem which makes the album worth finding. This time out it's a simple, acoustic number, "Wind Up From Mexico," featuring harmonica player and singer Lester Chambers (of Chambers Brothers fame) and guitarist K.K. Martin, the latter with some nice slide work. Making a return appearance to Blues Today, Volume III is legendary blues drummer Chico Chism, who handles the vocal work on the blues shuffle "Blues Today." The perpetually cool Chism doesn't sound completely comfortable with this number, but it still comes across well. Another keeper is an acoustic tune with an ole' timey feel, "Thumbnail Moon," featuring good fiddle ...

| | Godfather's R&B: James Brown's Production 1962-1967 CD (2008) (Import) United Kingdom
Some Great Reward
$16.65 This compilation collects many of James Brown's pre funk productions onto one CD for the very first time. These highlight the godfather of soul's intuitive feel for putting together great records with the members of his revue. This compilation contains 1
As prolific a recording artist as James Brown was in the 1960s, and as busy a touring machine as the one he led on the road was, he somehow found time to produce and work on numerous discs by other artists. The Godfather's R&B: James Brown's Productions 1962-67 has 22 such tracks, one of them (the 1966 single "New Breed [The Boo-Ga-Loo]") an instrumental actually credited to Brown himself, though the others are billed to other performers. In one sense, these extracurricular activities gave Brown additional chances to test and refine some ideas, especially as his music moved from more traditional soul to funk. As Dean Rudland's fine liner notes point out, this was especially the case from late 1963 to early 1965, when legal problems prevented Brown from recording often as a singer. From these standpoints, this CD is a valuable document of an aspect of his career that's usually ...
