After five hit albums spanning 1978 through 1982, Van Halen issued its biggest album yet with 1984 (released the same year as its title). 1984 spawned several monster hits and is often heralded as the ultimate rock album of the decade. Van Halen was experiencing internal friction despite such success. Depending on whose story you choose to believe, either singer David Lee Roth wanted to put the band on the backburner in favor of a film career or the Van Halen brothers were letting drink and drugs affect their work ethic. Either way, Roth shocked the music world when he announced his departure from the band in 1985.
A few months prior to his resignation, Roth issued his first solo release, the four-track CRAZY FROM THE HEAT EP. It was an all-covers affair, recorded just for the sheer fun of it. Like his previous work with Van Halen, CRAZY was a big hit. Two very popular singles/videos were issued - "California Girls" and a medley of "Just A Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody"-while "Easy Street" and "Coconut Grove" also proved enjoyable. Although some criticized Dave for the EP's lightheartedness (he was of heavy metal renown, after all), CRAZY FROM THE HEAT remains an interesting career detour.

David Lee Roth is back! Not that he ever left us in the first place. The self-professed Toasmaster of the Immoral Minority has delivered his most thunderous release since 1988's SKYSCRAPER. After venturing into the world of "R&B metal" with his last effort, Roth has gone back to doing what he does best; tearin' the roof off the sucka' and putting it into hyperdrive. DLR BAND contains all of the tongue-in-cheek Roth innuendoes, combined with the lightning-hot guitar licks of John Lowery (also in Rob Halford's Two), and veteran Roth sideman Terry Kilgore.

After David Lee Roth's shocking split from Van Halen at the height of the group's popularity, all parties involved resorted to a media-fueled circus of mudslinging. Roth's first post-V.H. project was to be a motion picture (CRAZY FROM THE HEAT) which never got off the ground. But Roth had already assembled a killer solo band, including ex-Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, ex-Talas bassist Billy Sheehan, and ex-Maynard Ferguson drummer Gregg Bissonette, to record songs for the movie's soundtrack. Instead of scrapping the tracks, he incorporated them into his first solo album, 1986's EAT 'EM AND SMILE.

On SKYSCRAPER, Roth stresses songwriting over instrumental virtuosity this time around-with often-grand results. The epic, sonically rich title track was comparable to little else at the time (or, for that matter, anything else since), while the single "Just Like Paradise" was the top-ten hit that pushed SKYSCRAPER to platinum status. Let's face it; David Lee Roth was the most exciting and entertaining singer to ever front Van Halen. And although his solo albums have not all been winners, at least he's been known to take chances and try new approaches with rock music (such as the entirely sung-in-Spanish Sonrisa Salvaje, the synth pop-ish Skyscraper, the Nile Rodgers-produced Your Filthy Little Mouth, etc.). For his 2003 release Diamond Dave, Roth uses the same approach he and his then-comrades in Van Halen followed on 1982's Diver Down -- an album consisting primarily of cover songs, with a few originals sprinkled in.
