Producers include: Stephen Bray, Jellybean, Mark Kamins, Madonna, Patrick Leonard. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. This is not a true greatest hits, but a collection of newly remixed (1987) versions of her hits. Released in 1987 as a stopgap, the remix album You Can Dance reworks material from Madonna's first three albums. Actually, it keeps the spotlight on her first record, adding non-LP singles like "Into the Groove" for good measure, along with a bonus track of "Where's the Party." Since it's a dance album, it doesn't matter that "Holiday" and "Into the Groove" are here twice, once each in dub versions, because the essential grooves and music are quite different in each incarnation. It is true that some of this now sounds dated -- these are quite clearly extended mixes from the mid-'80s -- but that's part of its charm, and it all holds together quite well. Not essential, but fun. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Madonna's meteoric rise to stardom had as its springboard the early '80s NY club scene; dance music has provided a home base for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning queen of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd made along the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable from the dance music genre at the time). Producer of Madonna's breakthrough "Holiday," he returns here with two slick remixes of the track, highlighting some of its many catchy instrumental nuances. The quintessential Madonna dance track, "Into The Groove," which inspired the album's title, bears the mark of editor Shep Pettibone. Pettibone's reassembling of the track turns it into an all-new dance experience, with inspired breaks and gliding accompaniment. The romantic classic "Over And Over" reinvents the original, augmenting Nile Rodgers's tight production with extra percussion and keyboards.Rolling Stone (4/11/02, p.108) - Ranked #50 in Rolling Stone's "50 Coolest Records" - "...Madonna's hits remixed by some of the Eighties' savviest DJs..." You Can Dance
$11.55 Beautiful ocean sounds, resplendent waves, and awe-inspiring wildlife are the key ingredients in “Sea Odysseyâ€. Inspired by the ocean since his youth, Hennie Bekker uses his mastery to bring the listener closer to nature by summoning the natural rhythms of our precious seas, and the naturally calmingsounds of whales and dolphins. This New Age and nature music influenced album of original compositions engages the listener, and allows for a relaxing aural and visual experience. Hennie Bekker is a musical pioneer whose eclectic and distinctive sound transcends genre. His award winning career has spanned decades and continents. A multi-platinum selling independent artist, Hennie is best known for his unique sound on the 'African Tapestries', 'SolitudesTM', 'Kaleidoscopes' and 'Tranquility™' album series. He was also a creative force behind the Juno award winning BKS, one of Canada's most successful electronic/dance bands. Bekker was raised in Mufulira, a Zambian copper mining town 10 miles south of the Congo border. In those early years, he was captivated by the symphonic sounds of the African wilderness, the haunting harmonies of tribal chanting and the rhythmic dialogue of drummers communicating between camps at sundown. Bekker is a self-taught pianist who had his professional debut at age 15, spending the next decade performing with various bands throughout Zambia, Zaire, Zimbabwe. In later years he experienced the wonders of the bushveld as he traveled 1000 miles of wilderness by motorcycle from the Zambian Copperbelt to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe via the Victoria Falls (The Smoke That Thunders). His journey, so close to the wild, forced him on one occasion, to wait a comfortable distance away from a herd of elephants crossing the road. Bekker's travels eventually took him to Kenya, the ...
