The Smiths: Stephen Patrick Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, piano, harmonium); Andy Rourke (cello, bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Additional personnel: Craig Gannon (guitar); Kristy MacColl (background vocals). Producers: The Smiths, Stephen Street, John Porter, Roger Pusey. LOUDER THAN BOMBS contains 24 songs, including 12 from the UK compilation of B-sides and singles THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN. 2 LPs on 1 CD. A compilation of singles, B-sides, album tracks, and BBC sessions assembled for the American market, Louder Than Bombs is an overlong and unfocused collection that nevertheless boasts a wealth of brilliant material. Since Hatful of Hollow was unavailable in the U.S. at the time of the release of Louder Than Bombs, this compilation contains large chunks of that album, as well as several cuts from The Smiths, which makes the record a little redundant for most Smiths fans. Also, Louder Than Bombs contains some of the worst material the group ever recorded, including the bland instrumental "Oscillate Wildly" and a cover of Twinkle's "Golden Light." Excluding all of this material, the remainder of the record is brilliant. The singles "Shakespeare's Sister," "Panic," "Ask," "Shoplifters of the World Unite," and "Sheila Take a Bow" are all definitive, as are the elegiac "Unloveable," "Asleep," "Stretch Out and Wait," and "Half a Person," which are all unavailable anywhere else (excluding the British counterpart to Louder Than Bombs, The World Won't Listen). Furthermore, the sneering, bouncing pop of "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby" and the bizarre travelogue of "Is It Really So Strange?" are two other essential songs not available anywhere else. Though The World Won't Listen is a more concise collection, Louder Than Bombs is a necessary purchase for any Smiths fan. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Compiled mostly from tracks on the two UK releases HATFUL OF HOLLOW and THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN, LOUDER THAN BOMBS is one of the best examples of the recorded genius of the Smiths. While the band's album releases were always anxiously awaited and well received, their most enduring gems could often be found on their singles. The Smiths took full advantage of the then-popular 12" single format, usually including non-album tracks on their B-sides, and this 24 track CD includes the most interesting examples of these. Numerous standout moments include "Ask," "Half A Person," "Shoplifters of the World Unite," "Panic," "William It Was Really Nothing," "Sheila Take A Bow," and "Stretch Out and Wait." An essential addition to any Smiths completist's collection.Alternative Press (p.200) - "BOMBS contains the most-rocking song in the Smiths catalog: 'London,' two minutes of whip-cracking Britpunk sass." Louder Than Bombs Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews "Why do I give valuable time"..? I heard half a person on the radio one day and fell in love with Morrissey's voice. I went out and bought this cd for the one song. Boy was I suprised when I listen to the entire album. This album is a masterpiece of eighties music.Till this day it still sounds fresh. My favorite line is from "these things take time"...the alcholic afternoon we spent in your room...The Queen might be dead, but the Smith's are still alive! My favorite Smiths CD Perhaps because it's the longest bunch of satisfying songs, perhaps because it's the 1st one I bought of theirs, or perhaps because these songs are so uniquely engaging, this is my favorite Smiths' CD. This is CD that got me into them, and the one I spun over and over. The intensely clever sarcasm and biting humor of the lyrics can't be described but are immensely cathartic, and Morrissey tackles a number of deep subjects no one else dares to. Marr's guitars rock out a bit harder than usual, with some extra feedback, along with acoustic guitars at lightning speed. Three quarters of the songs are absolute Smiths classics one has to have in their collection and return to. There's nothing like Morrissey complaining about finally finding a depressing job working for people who don't care if he lives or dies, single people with fear of relationships (Girl Afraid), a riot act against the music business (Panic), and a very sensitive lyric about the torn feelings on a terminated pregnancy (This Night Has Opened My Eyes). Marr's guitar riff melodic hooks in that latter song, and Hand In Glove, the catchy Half A Person, and You Just Haven't Earned it Yet are worth the price of admission alone. A complete classic and definitive masterpiece by the Smiths. Submitted by Andrew M. (Santa Rosa, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sums up The Smiths This album is probably the best introduction to them, due to sheer quantity, so it gives a wide range. Its not as good as The Queen Is Dead (nothing is), but its still fantastic. Oh, by the way: to the other reviewer who asked the question: The woman on the cover is not Patti Smith, but the playwrite Shelagh Delaney, though good guess as they are fans of Patti Smith Submitted by Joe (Sussex, England) Was This Review Helpful? Serious question... First off, want to say I quite enjoy the Smiths, and love to infinity solo Morrisey! And the question: Is that Patty Smith on the cover of "Louder than Bombs?" And did she ever have any connection to the Smiths whatever? Cheers to whoever can answer this!

Louder Than Bombs
$10.59 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, harmonica); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at Pluto and Eden Studios, Manchester, and Matrix and Strawberry Studios, London in the winter of 1983. Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, the Smiths' eponymous debut was the bracing beginning of a new era. On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't radically different from traditional British guitar pop -- Johnny Marr's ringing, layered ...

Louder Than Bombs
$10.65 Live Recording
The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at Amazon Studios, Liverpool and Ridge Farm, Surrey, England. The Smiths' second album isn't a great leap forward, but it does contain some fine guitar-pop, including "The Headmaster Ritual," "Rusholme Ruffians," and "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore." The American version included the pulsating "How Soon is Now?," which doesn't fit the mood of the rest of the album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine With their second proper album Meat Is Murder, the Smiths begin ...
| | Smiths Queen Is Dead CD (1986)
Louder Than Bombs
$10.79 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded in England in Winter 1985. Meat Is Murder may have been a holding pattern, but The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths' great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that's only on a relative scale -- although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn't rock in a conventional sense. Instead, Johnny Marr has created a dense web of guitars, ...
| | Smiths Strangeways, Here We Come CD (1987)
Louder Than Bombs
$9.09 The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals, piano); Johnny Marr (guitar, piano); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Recorded at The Wool Hall, Bath, England in the spring of 1987. Recorded as the relationship between Morrissey and Johnny Marr was beginning to splinter, Strangeways, Here We Come is the most carefully considered and elaborately produced album in the group's catalog. Though it aspires greatly to better The Queen Is Dead, it falls just short of its goals. With producer Stephen Street, the Smiths created a subtly shaded and skilled album, one boasting ...

Includes liner notes by Joel Selvin. Close to definitive is the best way to describe the three-disc box Steve Miller Band. That, or missed opportunity. The set is divided pretty well, with the first disc being devoted to the early years, the second to the hitmaking era, and the third to the blues. Now, this isn't a hard-and-fast breakdown, since there's no one on God's green earth ...
