(2 Customer Reviews)
1987's appropriately-titled COLLABORATION was Benson's first all-instrumental album in 11 years, and the first time he and acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh had teamed up for a recording. Klugh shines on "Brazilian Stomp," while Benson puts out some fluid work on "Mimosa" as well as on the title cut. Benson's scatting, Marcus Miller's skilled bass playing and Harvey Mason's taps offer some quality live support, while most of the background instrumentation consists of a pre-programmed drum machine wash.
COLLABORATION will please true Klugh fans more than Benson fans; however, Benson fans in search of a mellow instrumental Benson should be satisfied. The pairing of Klugh and Benson creates a sound comparable to that of Klugh paired with Bob James: a peaceful and relaxing background recording that will help set the mood for many occasions.
Principally recorded at Power Station, New York, New York and Bill Schnee Studios, Hollywood, California.
Personnel includes: George Benson (electric guitar); Earl Klugh (classical guitar); Greg Phillinganes (keyboards, synthesizer); James Newton Howard (synthesizer, programming); Paul Jackson (guitar); Charles Domanico (acoustic bass); Marcus Miller (electric bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Harvey Mason (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Jason Miles, Larry Williams, Jimmy Bralower, Rhett Lawrence (programming).

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Collaboration CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Collaboration music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. ...
| | Marshall Tucker Band Where We All Belong CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Collaboration songs
$10.69 Originally released on Capricorn Records (0145). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso.
Although it runs a little long, Where We All Belong captures the sound of The Marshall Tucker Band coming into its own. Half the tracks are new studio recordings, which are more focused than their previous releases; the other half is a harder-edged, jam-oriented live set. Taken together, they show that the band was progressing musically. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Pat Martino All Sides Now CD (1997)
Collaboration CD music
$10.49 Veteran Pat Martino is teamed up with a variety of different fellow guitarists on this interesting if not quite essential release. Martino matches wits with guitarist Charlie Hunter (who on Stevie Wonder's "Too High" often sounds like an organist), Tuck Andress, Kevin Eubanks, Les Paul ("I'm Confessin'"), Mike Stern and Michael Hedges. In addition, Cassandra Wilson sings Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" accompanied by Martino, and rock guitarist Joe Satriani tries to sit in on two numbers (with indifferent results). A decent effort, but not up to Pat Martino's most significant releases. ~ Scott Yanow
Out of print in the U.S.! 1996 album from the Jazz guitar legend. 10 tracks featuring 'Too High', 'Progression', Outrider' and more. Blue Note.

| | David Ostwald Blues In Our Heart CD (1999) (Import) Germany
Collaboration music CDs
$15.65 Youngish lawyer/tuba player Ostwald assembled this multigenerational Gully Low Jazz Band to play early period swing of the '20s and '30s. Many of these tunes are associated with Paul Whiteman, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, or Mildred Bailey. This recording, expertly produced and annotated by George Avakian, has Ostwald playing primarily rhythm (no bassist is included) with the truly all-star cast of trumpeter Randy Sandke, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Mark Shane, guitarist Howard Alden, and drummer Herlin Riley, performing some of the best individual Tin Pan Alley to Lincoln Center swingers in current-day jazz, and going back to the 1919 Jelly Roll Morton tune "Someday Sweetheart," the less well-known, non-forced "Home," or the down-a-lazy-river two-beat ballad "When Day Is Done." In the latter, featuring Peplowski, an easily portrayed old-time, relaxed feeling is quite evident. ...
