Personnel: Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Vince Gill (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Emory Gordy (vocals, guitar, bass); Carl Jackson (vocals, guitar); Mike Aldridge, Jerry Douglas (dobro); Mark O'Connor (fiddle, viola, mandola). Engineers include: Donivan Cowart, Joe Scaif, Paul Goldberg. Recorded at The Barn, Brentwood, Tennessee and The Music Mill, Nashville, Tennessee. Angel Band is yet another fascinating left turn, an acoustic record comprised of country-gospel songs like "We Shall Rise, " "If I Be Lifted Up" and "Someday My Ship Will Sail, " performed with great subtlety and nuance. ~ Jason Ankeny On this 1987 recording, Emmylou Harris focuses on country ballads with a Christian bent. Many traditional songs arranged by Harris are heard here, including "If I Be Lifted Up," "Bright Morning Stars," "We Shall Rise," "Drifting Too Far," and the title track, "Angel Band." Songs by Paul Kennerly and Ralph and Carter Stanley are also featured. Lyrically, the songs on ANGEL BAND revolve around the pursuit of redemption, forgiveness, and joy in a world of heartbreak and loss. Musically, the group, consisting of country greats Vince Gill, Jerry Douglas, and Mark O'Connor among others, is sensitive, subtle and melodically compelling. The highlight of the album is the uplifting "When They Ring Those Golden Bells," which features fine instrumental work in addition to Harris's beautiful vocal performance.Mojo (Publisher) (12/00, p.41) - "...Home-made white gospel....The yearning beauty of a clapboard chapel in an empty ocean of parry, Sunday morning, the hymn-singing carried on the wind from miles away..." NME (Magazine) (2/14/00, p.42) - 8 out of 10 - "...The spartan acoustic backdrop allows [her] to really throw herself into traditional material....as succinct an affirmation of her immense vocal talents as you could hope for." Great inspiration Emmylou Harris's sweet voice allows these lovely old hymns that are no longer in the hymn book to grace our lives, and the harmonies are delicious. Its great to play in the car and sing along on the way to school. Submitted by a reviewer (Burnsville, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Angelic, Indeed! While any Emmylou album is a true work of artistry, this album shines and sits alone from the pack. Few people know that this album started as a Christmas present Emmy was going to give to just a select group of friends. She was convinced to release it to the public and we are all the better for it. Everything from her vocals to the arrangements to the simple instrumentation and the sweet, sweet harmony vocals of Vince Gill make "Angel Band" a true musical masterpiece. This cd is a transcending and spiritual experience for anyone who listens to it and is guaranteed to be a welcomed and treasured addition to any collection. Angel Band
$11.29 Jars Of Clay: Stephen Mason (vocals, guitar, National guitar, lap & pedal steel guitar, mandolin); Dan Haseltine (vocals, percussion); Matthew Odmark (acoustic guitar, banjo, background vocals); Charlie Lowell (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards, background vocals). Producers: Jars Of Clay, Mitch Dane, Ron Aniello. Recorded at Sputnik, Franklin, Tennessee. Personnel: Kenny Meeks (vocals, mandolin); Dan Haseltine (vocals, percussion); Ashley Cleveland (vocals); Stephen Mason (guitar, lap steel guitar, National guitar, mandolin); Matthew Odmark (acoustic guitar, banjo, background vocals); John Catchings (cello); Charlie Lowell (accordion, piano, organ, keyboards, background vocals); Chris McHugh, Ken Coomer, Ben Mize (drums). Audio Mixer: Jacquire King . Recording information: Sputnik, Franklin, TN. Photographers: Henk Schiffmacher; Crystal Heald; Martyn Atkins. Arranger: Jars of Clay. For 2002's Eleventh Hour, Jars of Clay seemed to transfer the inherent power of their music from soulful vocals and grassroots gospel to the din of ragged electric guitars and anxious drum machines. That wasn't a bad decision, necessarily, but the album did seem to be more of a mood piece than anything. For Who We Are Instead, the band settled into the comfortable Tennessee environs of its own Sputnik studio and set about tuning up those old acoustic guitars. The resulting 13 songs still nod to modernism with slick production and the occasional twinge of programming. But where the electronics of Eleventh tracks like "Disappear" or "Revolution" seemed to cast a shadow, the gritty, percolating bottom end of Who We Are Instead's "Trouble Is" adds resolve to the song's slide-guitar tale of darkness and light. "My heart ain't built to stay," vocalist Dan Haseltine sings in an appropriately world weary tone. "Jesus told me so." It's in this way that Jars of Clay unites their own beliefs with the larger church of American roots music. "Amazing Grace" (with its fabulous guest shot from vocalist Ashley Cleveland) is another signpost on that long U.S. route to redemption; it finds its spiritual brethren in Live's "Lightning Crashes" and U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The band even reveals the reverent heart ...

It’s consummate musicianship. Electrifying!” He’s been guest soloist with such orchestras as the Boston Pops, Mantovani, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and St. Louis. Merv Griffin called him “Dynamite!” He’s shared the stage with the likes of Bill Cosby, Glen Campbell, The Fifth Dimension, and Victor Borge. Yet, in thirty years as an entertainer, performing nearly 3000 concerts worldwide, Mac Frampton has remained committed to a fundamental ...
