Live Recording
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Richie Ramone (drums). Additional personnel includes: Debbie Harry (background vocals). Recorded at Intergalactic Studios, New York, New York. Although Halfway to Sanity still bears remnants of the heavy guitar attack of Animal Boy, it's actually a much sharper record than its predecessor, since it doesn't ignore the Ramones' trashy pop roots. There's still a noticeable lack of consistent material, yet cuts like "Go Lil' Camaro Go" and "I Know Better Now" have solid hooks, and a handful of other songs suggest that the Ramones could have handled their second decade a little more gracefully than they actually did. It may not be as strong as Subterranean Jungle or Too Tough to Die, but in many ways, Halfway to Sanity is the last time the Ramones still sounded like they mattered. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The late-eighties Ramones album formula went something like this: One crunchy, metallic mid-tempo number, an ode or two to girls or cars, a few songs by drummer Ritchie and a one or two hardcore punk numbers, preferably sung by Dee Dee. While HALFWAY TO SANITY does follow this formula, it benefits from strong songwriting (particuarly on Dee Dee's part, making up from an almost absent Joey) and crisp production courtesy of old friend Daniel Rey (ex-Masters of Reality). The chunky metallic number is "I Wanna Live," which rightly became an MTV staple for a few months. The Richie songs are a bit hit-and-miss this time around (the forgettable "I Know Better Now"), though "I'm Not Jesus" is a hardcore classic. Dee Dee's turn at playing Speed Racer, "I Lost My Mind," tears by so quickly and enjoyably that is only later that you realize the song has only three lines in it repeated over and over again. The added highlight of Debbie Harry's guest vocals on a raved-up "Go Lil' Camaro Go" makes HALFWAY TO SANITY a strong late-period Ramones record.

Halfway To Sanity
$13.19 Mouse on Mars: Jan St. Werner, Andi Toma. This 2006 release (their first on the Epicac label, 10th overall) finds Mouse on Mars in a typically playful mood, but with perhaps a more frantic and harder edge than fans have come to expect. The beats here are aggressive, with abrasive layers of sound that build in intensity. The duo pays noisy respects to their Krautrock forebears on "Duul" and the Kraftwerk-esque "Retphase," and they hypnotize with the thwack-thump electronica of "Inocular." As un-bubbly as VARCHARZ may be, it is inspiring to witness an act still growing and poking at the edges 10 albums into their career. Just in case anyone thought Mouse on Mars got too poppy and danceable on Radical Connector, its follow-up, Varcharz, is nearly its polar opposite: jagged, fractured, splintered, and downright violent-sounding, it's easily the most extreme music the duo has made, and is right in line with the rest of Ipecac's output. The album's squelchy, stuttering beats have ties to Mouse on Mars' noisiest, most abstract earlier work, such as Niun Niggung's "Distroia," but Varcharz is hardly a regression or a rehash. If anything, the way Jan St. Werner and ...

Halfway To Sanity
$10.09 Composer: J Mercis. Audio Mixer: John Agnello. Recording information: Bisquiteen, Amherst, MA (2006). Photographer: Philipp Virus. As one of the seminal college-rock bands of the late '80s/early '90s, Dinosaur Jr. definitively bridged the gap between the musical mindsets of '80s "alternative" and '90s "indie." Along the way, they influenced scads of young slackers wielding fuzzy guitars and moldy Neil Young albums. The recordings around which the band's legend largely revolves (GREEN MIND, YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME, BUG) epitomized the slacker-rock aesthetic through J. Mascis's laid-back drawl and the band's Crazy Horse-meets-Replacements attack. After bassist Lou Barlow split for Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr. attained more commercial success before falling apart, the final album popping out in 1997. A decade later, Mascis and Barlow reunited for a tour that led to the recording of BEYOND. While the post-Barlow Dinosaur albums found Mascis pushing the edges of the group's original stylistic template, BEYOND is a resounding return to form. The crunching guitars and whomping rhythm section move as one, hammering out simple, forceful riffs and rhythms that evoke the band's glory days. The proceedings are invested with ...
