Coming at the end of the Talking Heads' discography, NAKED finds the Heads returning to many elements of the complex, polyrhythmic arrangements that marked their work earlier in the decade, prior to the rootsier LITTLE CREATURES. Reflecting a more European influence, NAKED was recorded in Paris and produced by Steve Lillywhite, who brings to bear his gift for making sprawling arrangements sound remarkably down-to-earth and radio-friendly (see U2). The album's truly special guest is former Smith Johnny Marr, who lends his imaginative fretboard work and timeless pop sensibility to tunes such as "Nothing but Flowers," and "Cool Water." Other standouts include "Blind," a bombastic groove that foreshadows Byrne's soon-to-follow solo work. Sparse, spastic, and filled with intellectual social rage, NAKED is at once a return to form and a fitting sendoff for one of music's relentlessly original and truly important forces.

Naked album
$8.85 When they burst out of the New York underground/CBGB's movement, the Heads stood apart from the pack because not only were they unlike anything that gone before, they were even anomalous to their contemporaries. A million miles from the detached irony of Blondie or the willful primitivism of the Ramones, the Talking Heads virtually invented geek-rock, setting the stage for everyone from the Violent Femmes to They Might Be Giants. Lyrically, David Byrne came off as the guy who thought too much about everything. Fortunately, he also happened to be a unique visionary, whose quirky, hyper-cerebral modernism echoed the work of poet John Ashbery and "serious" composer Robert Ashley.
All this high-mindedness doesn't detract from the infectious rock & roll ...
| | Talking Heads More Songs About Buildings & Food CD (1978)
Naked CD music
$8.75 The Heads' second album found them building on the twitchy "new wave" sound they established with their debut while using that approach as a springboard for new lyrical and musical innovations. The band's sonic pallette is a bit wider here; the interplay between the guitars of David Byrne and Jerry Harrison is more fully developed here, are Harrison's keyboard contributions (he was, after all, strictly a keys man in the Modern Lovers, one of the Heads' primary influences). The band displays diversity with their first recorded cover tune, Al Green's "Take Me To The River," which they redefine with an ominous, supple sensuality. While Byrne still sounds like his nerves are being stretched to the breaking point, the band is a little looser here, as on the jumpy, Velvet Underground-ish "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." Byrne's hyper-intellectualism is in full flower on BUILDINGS, from the gender politics lesson "The Girls Want ...
| | Talking Heads Fear Of Music CD (1979)
Naked music CDs
$7.49 Principally recorded at Chris and Tina's loft, Long Island City, Queens, New York.
FEAR OF MUSIC is the point of transition between the angular art-school new wave of the Heads' early work and the P-Funk-inspired modalism of their early-'80s output. While there's nothing as funky or visionary as REMAIN IN LIGHT here, the album represents a step in a new direction. At the same time, the Heads' white-knuckled neuroticism is pushed to the extreme here. Almost unrelentingly dark and paranoid-sounding, the tunes find Byrne at his most Anthony Perkins-like, and the interplay of the guitars, even more syncopated and thoughtfully arranged than on the previous album, provides a pointillistic landscape on which Byrne can let his twitchy persona run free. From the tense espionage ...
| | Talking Heads Remain In Light CD (1980)
Naked songs
$6.09 Though the previous album FEAR OF MUSIC provided a bit of foreshadowing, Talking Heads fans could never have guessed what was in store for them with the release of REMAIN IN LIGHT. A visionary work of innovation and inspiration, it's arguably one of the finest albums of the 1980s. The band leaves behind the two-guitars-over-a-quirky-rock-beat ethic of their previous work, adopting a funky, modal approach. Abandoning traditional song form and chord progressions, the tunes here are built around layers of overdubbed keyboard, guitar and percussion parts that weave around each other in an almost fugue-like manner, relying on the adding and subtracting of elements in the mix for dynamics, instead of on chord changes and structural development.
It was a radical approach for a rock band, and it's reflected in the lyrics as well. Byrne abandons ...
| | Talking Heads Little Creatures CD (1985)
Naked album
$6.05 After the abstract funk experimentation of REMAIN IN LIGHT and SPEAKING IN TONGUES, the Heads decided to return to their roots with LITTLE CREATURES. They abandoned the modal, polyrhythmic approach in favor of the two-guitars/4/4 pop structures of yore. While LITTLE CREATURES is the band's most accessible, radio-friendly album, it's not a step backwards by any means, because as they return to the quirky "new wave" style that made them famous, they bring a well-earned sophistication (both harmonic and lyrical) to the table. These advances allow the band to knock out a crop of winners, like the anti-anthem "Road To Nowhere," the semi-mystical (but ...
| | David Bowie Never Let Me Down CD (1987)
Naked CD music
$9.79 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England).
After having spent the the mid-'80s putting on his acting shoes for Absolute Beginners and Labyrinth, Bowie returned to music by grabbing his usual henchmen Carlos Alomar and Carmine Rojas and joining forces with old schoolmate Peter Frampton. NEVER LET ME DOWN found Bowie writing or co-writing everything with the exception of Iggy Pop's "Bang Bang." Songs such as "Day-In Day-Out" and "Time Will Crawl" were perfect Bowie songs that worked opposite ends of the spectrum; the everyday reality of a struggling woman living on the periphery of society versus the ambiguity of time itself. Although the creamy synths and slick production are occasional reminders that NLMD was cut in the '80s, these flourishes work especially well on "Zeroes" and the title track. The only hint of indulgence comes in the semi-mythical "Glass Spider" and the rap duet vignette with Mickey Rourke (!) that Bowie drops into the middle of "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)." After that chilling encounter, Bowie fled the solo life for the safer confines of Tin Machine in 1989.
Never Let Me Down is enhanced, digitally remastered and contains previously unseen or rare photographs in addition ...
| | Abrasive Wheels Black Leather Girl CD (1984) (Import) Canada
Naked music CDs
$10.75 Recorded at Strawberry Studios, 1984's Black Leather Girl was Leeds Oi! band Abrasive Wheels' second album, and found the band maturing rapidly. Soaring vocal harmonies, saxophones, and smooth arrangements characterize a record that, though it remains unmistakably abrasive, also packs a glossy edge that suggested future recordings might even verge on mainstream rock. Of course that was not to be, and Black Leather Girl stands as the last will and testament of a band that really deserved ...
