With cover art that features one of the best uberbrows in the history of music, In Effect Mode and its lead single, "Nite and Day," took Al B. Sure! from being just another smooth R&B singer to the top of the music charts. It certainly didn't hurt matters much that André Harrell and Teddy Riley helped to produce this debut album. Of course, the leadoff track helped to redefine quiet storm ballads for the new jack generation, but there are other gems on In Effect Mode as well, including "Off on Your Own (Girl)," where the narrator pursues the love of an uninterested lady, only to find out later that she is a lesbian. The updated, digitally enhanced cover of the classic "Killing Me Softly" is also of note, if only to contrast how the tone and palette of R&B evolved over a short period of time. And "Just a Taste of Lovin'" most certainly foreshadows the new jack phenomenon that Teddy Riley was to mastermind. Most people would be well off just getting these songs on one of the many readily available greatest-hits compilations, but those looking to dig deeper will no doubt enjoy this album from start to finish. ~ Rob Theakston

touch my heart
this album is off the hook, i remember when it came i can recall being in love with this guy we where back in high school about 1988 and would listen too these songs all day "naturally mines" is one of my ummmm favorites till this day i get chills in my body when i hear it mmmmmmmm

When heard "Nite and Day" in 1988, I thinked: Wow,what's sound is this?I liked very much,and didn't went out in my mind.Until today,it is in my head,in my heart.Remember me old goodtimes.Yes,the album is very good.Buy!!You'll like

A part of a lost era, Classic Album!!
Man I remember this album when I was in 9th grade. All the songs on this album were hot..no fillers here.
My favorite tracks are "off on your own girl", "naturally mine", and "Nite and day"(spanish version is cool too)
and "ohh this love is so".
The music on this album is timeless, it can still rock a party or make you sit and reminisce what you were doing when you first heard it or just remember the good times when R&B and the "Golden age of hip hop" were in effect. I recommend this album.
Al B. Sure needs to make some more albums. I heard is is now a radio disc jockey. Cool!

From the sound of this album one would suspect Otto's Daughter to be the offspring of Marilyn Manson and Shirley Manson, with Trent Reznor as the obstetrician. Moans, groans, shrieks, sighs, yawns, clanks, and spooky horror movie synth effects season the tracks, creating gloomy and occasionally compelling goth rock. There are some sonic experiments like "Cuts" (which sounds like someone is indeed being cut up) and "Venus Asleep," which suggests the audial experience of trying to wake up. On the vocal tracks, voices are often overdubbed and electronically altered to sound rather like ET. Of note are the scatologically silly "Showgirls"; "Todestanz" (Death Dance), sung in German; the surprisingly tuneful "Hail"; and a cover of Depeche Mode's "Stripped" which is competent but lacks David Gahan's charismatic vocal style. Renew is a good party record for goth fans. Other listeners may find some amusement, but will also find some tracks to be snoozers. ~ Lynne Bronstein
