An infectious update of the classic synth-pop most famous earlier in the decade, Information Society's self-titled debut sounds most similar to British groups like ABC and Pet Shop Boys, though hits like "What's on Your Mind," "Walking Away," and the cover of "Lay All Your Love on Me" manage to inject the affair with elements of industrial dance and hip-hop. All in all, it's a much better album than expected from the group many dismissed as mere one-hit wonders. ~ John Bush

Information Society songs
$9.25 (MP3 Available for Download) When in Rome was another in a long line of British pop acts scoring one major hit single before seemingly disappearing without a trace. The 1988 hit "The Promise" was essentially a carbon copy of New Order's radio-friendly dance-rock. Dark yet catchy, boasting a throbbing dance rhythm, a singalong chorus, and a hypnotic melody, "The Promise" certainly deserved the success. Like many one-hit wonders of the '80s, When in Rome failed to maintain the momentum set by its only hit song by releasing a dud of an album. "The Promise," the opening track on When in Rome, starts things off nicely, but the remainder of the album is embarrassingly weak. Vocalists Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann sound just fine solo (as demonstrated on "The Promise"), but their attempts to harmonize on such tunes as "Heaven Knows" and "I Can't Stop" are often laughably bad. "Wide Wide Sea" is the only track here that comes close to matching the dramatic, instantly memorable songcraft of "The Promise"; the rest of the album ...

| | Camouflage Voices & Images CD (1988)
Information Society music CDs
$10.35 When it was played on modern rock radio stations in 1988, Camouflage had everybody duped with "The Great Commandment." With its chilly synths, robotic percussion, and gloomy vocals, the song was a Depeche Mode doppelganger. Similarly, Camouflage's debut album Voices & Images is the ...
| | Camouflage Methods Of Silence CD (1989)
Information Society songs
$10.49 Principally recorded at Synsound Studios, Brussels, Belgium in 1989.
On their 1989 sophomore album, Camouflage entered the synth pop game when most people had already moved on. Camouflage's material contrasted sharply with the vibrancy of the ensuing decade, and the album's widening addition of violins, saxophones, and guitars couldn't prevent the band from being forced into a prematurely outdated pigeonhole. Regardless, "On Islands" and "One Fine Day" were sweet, multi-textured pop that swayed like a hammock strung between industrial pylons, while "Rue de Moorslede" regaled itself with a taut instrumental of circus organs, filtered horns, and the recurring sound of doors slammed shut. It was the opposite of '90s IDM -- simple, sonically precise, forever reliant on pop song structures -- and, along ...
| | Dils Class War CD (2000)
Information Society album
$9.25 (MP3 Available for Download) This set includes The Dils' WHAT 7" and tracks from a rare live album.
This is a reissue of the vinyl LP Live, a high-quality 1980 board tape released on Iloki/XXX in 1987. Class War features a new title, new sleeve, new photos, and different liner notes. Additionally, the band's debut single is tacked on in lieu of the four poor quality live tracks from 1977 that closed out Live. The sound on the disc, recorded just before the trio sadly split up, is hotter than most bootlegs, offering a parade of neo-classics: "I Hate the Rich," "Class War," and an incredibly improved (slowed down) "You're Not Blank." (Fans will also recognize "The Sound of the Rain," a Dils single the Kinmans re-recorded for their second LP with Rank & File, 1984's Long Gone Dead, as well as "Tell Her I Love Her," a hot song badly reworked for that same LP.) As John Silvers, the longest-running ...

| | Gnos-Tel-Jah Becoming CD (2009)
Information Society CD music
$9.85 Gnos-tel-jah, pronounced "nostalgia" refers, literally, to a longing for the past. In our world today, there is definitely a longing for how things used to be. What we are doing as a group is taking this longing and using it as motivation to create something new.As our "new" name breaks down, "Gnos" refers to, and is the shortened version of "Gnostic" which means a heightened knowledge of spirituality, and also depicts certain "Gospels" of the Bible that were ommitted. In using this term, we are expressing the fact that we are uncovering unspoken truths, and pushing the envelope of what is socially acceptable. "Tel" refers to "Telecommunications" as a means to spread the music and the message. In this day and age, technology is the mode of transfer of infformation, and the use of "tel" merely includes this fact. Lastly, "Jah" refers to the Rastafarian Godhead, but actually means much more in our name. "Jah" coupled with "Gnos" portrays religious and cultural tolerance as two very differing perspectives are included in one name. Also, "Jah" as a Godhead portrays the masculine and feminine divinity which is key for the band because we have both male and female voices intermingling. Gnos-tel-jah is currently ...
