Erasure's third album, 1988's THE INNOCENTS, features the US breakthrough hits "A Little Respect," and "Chains of Love," and is a welcome departure for the duo. With this release, Vince Clarke and Andy Bell move away from the strictly-synthesized Hi-NRG dance-pop of their earlier albums, adding horns and gospel-tinged backing vocals for a more soulful, organic sound, while maintaining the disco vitality of earlier albums like WONDERLAND or THE CIRCUS.
Bell's lyrics are more overt in their social commentary, as on "Phantom Bride" and "A Little Respect," and he pointedly leaves the original gender references intact in the CD-only cover of Tina Turner's classic "River Deep, Mountain High." However, the duo is still capable of camp silliness like "Sixty-Five Thousand" and "Yahoo!" giving the album a balanced sensibility. THE INNOCENTS ranks with 1989's WILD! and 1994's I SAY I SAY I SAY as one of Erasure's best albums.

great erasure album!
This is by far erasure's greatest album from the 80's and for many their best album ever.
Loaded with many happy upbeat songs which feature lots of bass synths and drums. A must have for synthpop fans. The album features 3 great singles and "when I needed you" one of their best non-single songs!

I gave this CD five stars. It has been one of my favorite albums since 1988 when it was released. If you like techno or dance...you've got to check it out!

if you were a young closeted gay boy in high school around the time this album was released, you found it as a well-welcomed refuge. you were able to find yourself in this record and it was your best friend, too. this was the first album i'd ever heard by erasure and it proved not to be the last. more than just a pop record, erasure venue into gospel, too, something they haven't done in a while. 'a little respect' went on to become the definitive eraure staple single, "chains of love" wasn't far behind. but my favorite track on this lp will always be "heart of stone", definitely erasure's finest 3 minutues. this is the one erasure album that if you have any erasure album at all, it's this one. if you're starting out as a fan, this is the one to start with. so definitely, YES. get this!

One of the bands that not only dominated the charts for most of the 80s, but they also typified the type of music that will be looked back on as 'the sound of the 80s'. Their sometimes Germanic electronic pop became softer on this album. They were becoming more of a band, and they were 'rockin', just a little.
