Sam Kinison's 1986 debut album Louder Than Hell was genius standup comedy. He was a loud, rude, unapologetically vulgar party animal -- and remarkably insightful. Kinison also earned small acting roles, most notably as the scene-stealing history professor in the Rodney Dangerfield movie Back to School. The former preacher had made a mark on pop culture as a "rock & roll comic" by the time of his second album, 1988's Have You Seen Me Lately? "Rubber Love" caused a controversy with Kinison's comments on safe sex, homosexuals, and AIDS. Warner Bros. even caved and placed a sticker on the album saying the contents did not reflect its corporate views. "The Story of Jim (Bakker)" is an appropriate lambasting of the fallen, hypocritical TV evangelist and his "innocent" mistress Jessica Hahn, who actually became one of Kinison's lovers. "Mother Mary's Mystery Date" is another daring, funny commentary on religion as Kinison speculates on Joseph's skepticism of the Virgin Mary's immaculate conception. Kinison acknowledges his audience's uneasiness with religious jokes on "Heart-Stoppers" and admits God might punish him with death; the bit eerily foreshadows Kinison's future. "Buddies" outlines a specific, X-rated prank that a man's friends may perpetrate on him while he's drunk. On the hysterical "Sexual Diaries," Kinison advises men to be wildly creative and aggressive lovers. That way, he argues, if your woman leaves you for another man, he has a lot to live up to. "The Butt and the Bible" and "Parties With the Dead" are beyond tasteless, which, in Kinison's hands, guarantees hilarity. "Wild Thing" is a reworked novelty version of the Troggs' hit. The most disturbing track is "Rock Against Drugs." Kinison disgustedly mocks anti-drunk-driving campaigns, but in 1992 he was killed by a drunk driver in a car crash. ~ Bret Adams

With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. The first solo outing from Mr. Rock & Roll himself, TALK IS CHEAP is a solid, rootsy effort with something for everyone. The opening cut, "Big Enough," mines a deep funk groove (abetted by veteran funksters Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell of Parliament/Funkadelic fame) and makes it clear that the set will not be pure Stones revival. While "Take It So Hard" kicks off with the clarion call of Keith Richards's signature guitar sound and echoes the vibe of Stones songs "Happy" and "Tumbling Dice," it lays claim to its own distinctive mood.
"I Could Have Stood You Up" hearkens back to the swinging rock & roll of the 1950s, complete with doo-wop backing vocals and honky-tonk piano, before segueing into mid-tempo, emotive tracks "Make No Mistake" and "You Don't Move Me," recalling late-'70s Dylan. Approaching the album's end, the melancholic "Locked Away" provides an antidote to the head-bobbing rhythm of "Rockawhile" and the angular closing punch of "It Means a Lot." Richards's understated vocal delivery and blues-drenched guitar lines (which manage to sound simultaneously clean, spare, and gloriously sleazy) earmark this fine collection of tunes.
