In 1989, many of the soul and funk bands that emerged in the '70s had either broken up or disappeared from the charts. But Maze featuring Frankie Beverly was not only hanging in there -- it was still selling a lot of albums. Released in 1989, Silky Soul was yet another big seller for Maze; it was also the band's first Warner Bros. release (after more than a decade at Capitol). On Silky Soul, Beverly favors a more high-tech production style than he had in the past. Maze's founder and lead singer knew that urban radio was very technology-minded, and he makes some urban contemporary moves by using more synthesizers and drum machines. Nonetheless, Silky Soul is state-of-the-art Maze. In fact, Silky Soul is an appropriate title for this CD because tracks like the funky "Love's on the Run" and the melancholy "Can't Get Over You" are essentially soul music -- the production style is more urban contemporary, but Beverly's singing and writing is still that of a soul man whose musical personality was shaped by the classic R&B of the '60s and '70s. Marvin Gaye is still a prominent influence, and Beverly pays tribute to the late soul singer on the hit title song. Silky Soul's title track is simply brilliant -- parts of the tune allude to Gaye's "What's Going On," but without obscuring Maze's own distinctive personality. Another great track is "Mandela," which calls for the release of South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela. In 1989, Mandela was still confined to a South African prison, but after the racist apartheid system was ended, he became South Africa's president. An excellent album, Silky Soul demonstrated that Maze could be relevant to 1989's urban contemporary scene without being unfaithful to its soul roots. ~ Alex Henderson

Silky Soul album
$7.85 The self-titled debut album from Indianapolis-based trio After 7 had success written all over it. Two-thirds of the trio are the brothers of producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and the other third is the cousin of Antonio "L.A." Reid; the two produced the majority of the album, which features three smash hits and a host of other likable tracks. The first smash single was "Heat of the Moment," a popular dance track that peaked at number five on the Billboard R&B charts. The second of the three hits was the number one single "Ready or Not," aided by Melvin Edmonds vigorous vocals. However, the song is anchored by Kevon Edmonds soaring natural tenor and the soothing melody that just sails along with the song's steady rhythm arrangement. The third smash single was "Can't Stop," also claiming the number one spot on the R&B charts; it's ...

| | Very Best Of Tower Of Power: The Warner Years CD (2001)
Silky Soul music CDs
$8.89 Recorded between 1972 & 1975. Includes liner notes by Kevin Phinney.
Digitally remastered by Bill Inglott & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep).
Usually, it's not a good sign if a band is generally known for augmenting artists instead of their own records, but Tower of Power was really a very good horn section, and they did make records that held their own. Of course, "What Is Hip?" was the biggest single they ever had, but they also had several other smaller hits that captured their sleek, stylized soul-funk quite well, such as "Soul Vaccination." Pretty much all of those songs are captured on Rhino's 2001 anthology The Very Best of Tower of Power: The Warner Years, which spans 16 tracks and contains almost all the highlights of their '70s records. Yes, the 1999 double-disc set What Is Hip? is more comprehensive, but that's really for serious listeners. For listeners that want a lean dose of the TOP's prime, this is the best collection on the market. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly CD (1977) Remastered
Silky Soul songs
$8.45 Maze started when singer/guitarist Frankie Beverly, who had kicked around in a number of Philly soul groups, was inspired to found the self-contained R&B band Raw Soul. After moving to San Francisco, the ensemble eventually metamorphosed into Maze. The band's 1978 debut album is split evenly between hard-grooving, percussion-laden funk and more melodic, vocal-oriented R&B. While "Lady of Magic" and "Look at California" are indicative of the soft, ballad-oriented style that would eventually make Maze famous, the heavy-hitting tunes "Time Is on My Side" and "Color Blind" help to make this the grittiest, funkiest album in the Maze catalogue. All the seeds of Maze's subsequent successes can be heard here in an embryonic state, but this is the work of a band in flux, still moving towards its signature sound.
Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
Digitally remastered by Odea Murphy (Tower Mastering).

| | Maze We Are One CD (1983) Remastered
Silky Soul album
$8.85 All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
Released in 1983, WE ARE ONE continues in the vein of Maze's smooth, positive R&B. The vehicle of singer, songwriter, and producer Frankie Beverly, Maze epitomized the seductive urban pop of the early '80s, even as Beverly's silky croon recalled the style of Marvin Gaye. Though not quite as commercially successful as the group's previous releases, this outing still spawned four charting singles, and, musically, finds Beverly and co. at the top of their game.
As a lyricist, Beverly is dedicated to disseminating a message of peace and brotherhood. This intent is particularly apparent on "Love Is the Key" and "I Wanna Thank You." Whether documenting the joys and travails of romantic love or offering a lesson on universal human acceptance (as on the title track), Beverly wears hope on his sleeve in a way that impresses with its sheer honesty. The stirring ballads ...
| | Maze Can't Stop The Love CD (1985) Remastered
Silky Soul CD music
$8.05 The mid-tempo "I Want to Feel I'm Wanted," another charting hit, showcases Frankie Beverly's trademark vulnerability, both lyrically and vocally (Beverly's singing is reminiscent, in its seductive smoothness, to Marvin Gaye's style). Tender love ballads, always a Maze specialty, are also represented with the creamy melodies of "Reachin' Down ...
| | Cece Winans CD (2001)
Silky Soul music CDs
$15.05 Principally recorded at Sound Kitchen Studios, Franklin, Tennessee and Abbey Road Studios, London, England.
CECE WINANS won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album.
After eight years of performing as a duo with brother BeBe Winans, 1995 saw the beginning of CeCe Winans' solo career, a move that only served to further the artistry and ministry of this singer/songwriter. In 2001, Winans' self-titled release marked her second album from Wellspring Gospel. The follow-up project to her 1999 gold-certified album, Alabaster Box, the release combines a variety of styles, including CCM, pop, urban, R&B, inspirational, and gospel. Winans had no doubt as to the direction and purpose of the self-titled release. In fact, with it she desired for "people to feel encouragement and passion." And the album does just that. Upbeat, energy-filled, and enthusiastic, the project is not only musically diverse but offers hard-hitting messages. The song "It's Gonna Get Better" was written with teen suicide prevention programs in mind, while "Bring Back the Days of Yea and Nay," a duet with brother Marvin Winans, challenges parents to take responsibility for training their children. A definite highlight on the album is the song "Looking Back at You." It is an inspirational track, leaning toward a ballad, that speaks of God's unfailing and unconditional love. ~ Ashleigh Kittle
