Out of all of Madonna's albums, Like a Prayer is her most explicit attempt at a major artistic statement. Even though it is apparent that she is trying to make a "serious" album, the kaleidoscopic variety of pop styles on Like a Prayer is quite dazzling. Ranging from the deep funk of "Express Yourself" and "Keep It Together" to the haunting "Oh Father" and "Like a Prayer," Madonna displays a commanding sense of songcraft, making this her best and most consistent album. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Madonna's exquisite sense of the pop song, and suitably stylish aesthetic to match, was pushed to the hilt for 1989's LIKE A PRAYER. Sporting a bare midriff and a stylishly dark bob, she immediately set the Moral Majority up in arms with the title track's video, depicting, among other things, a black Christ and a hillside of burning crosses. The song, however, was as strong and as dazzling as the images. Before deciding on utilizing a constant barrage of public sexuality over songs, Madonna made great records. Highlights here include the sexy bubble-gum of "Cherish" and the delightful "Express Yourself." Great pop to go. I had to fight like all the rest in the Bario all the Streets are paved with fear. Yes Chesterfield at least he was a Man. The songs are good, Cheerish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father-you still hurt me.

Classic Madonna Like A Prayer is one of Madonna best albums - so powerful and unique sounding. Like A Prayer is classic hit #1. Express Yourself was great hit and the best music video of the 80's. Ballads Cherish and On Father were so deep and emotional songs. I also wanna give a credit to Till Death Do Us Part and Spanish Eyes - should have been released as singles. Dear Jessie was great as well.

One song solves an entire album! This is not because I am a Jeff Porcaro fan, but I have to say a few words. I apreciate Madonbna for what she did for 80's pop music and I apreciate Pat Leonard for working with her. "Like A Prayer" is a song that had to be born, but the direction of the album is set by "Cherrish", a song that couldn't be as good as it is without Jeff Porcaro's drum work! I worked in local radios for more than 10 years and I can say that that "Cherrish" is one of the best songs that came out from those years. How coult ir sound without Jeff's drummming?? Madonna will never have another period of activity as the one when Jeff worked with her. That's for sure! Submitted by Andrei Sandor (Oradea, Romania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
GREAT album, outdated sound quality This is arguably Madonna's best work to date, yet Warner Bros have failed to remaster this cd, and why??? It's sold multimillion copies in the US alone, so it's more than worthy of a nice updated sound. I love this album and it's a total shame that it's not been remastered, instead we have to hear it in it's flat unflattering sound quality. Warner Bros, get your act together!!! One of her best. Although I never really listened to the words of all her songs, I really love Oh father. It's a sad song. If the words are true, I can see where she got the inspiration for a lot of her songs. Great songwriters draw on reality rather than fantasy. Like A Prayer blew me away when I first heard it. The video will go down in history. Submitted by Mike (Belen NM) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Like A Prayer
$15.85 Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, alto & tenor saxophones, Moog synthesizer, Mellotron); Warren Peace (vocals); Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (drums). Principally recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Earl Slick, Carlos Alomar (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); George Murray (bass guitar); Dennis Davis (drums). Taking the detached plastic soul of Young Americans to an elegant, robotic extreme, Station to Station is a transitional album that creates its own distinctive style. Abandoning any pretense of being a soulman, yet keeping rhythmic elements of soul, David Bowie positions himself as a cold, clinical crooner and explores a variety of styles. Everything from epic ballads and disco to synthesized avant pop is present on Station to Station, but what ties it together is Bowie's cocaine-induced paranoia and detached musical persona. At its heart, Station to Station is an avant-garde art-rock album, most explicitly on "TVC 15" and the epic sprawl of the title ...

$16.45 REVIEW 1 - AARDSCHOK MAGAZINEMeyvn - Splintered SkiesKillzone RecordsTwo weeks ago I was hanging around the Prog-power forum at UltimateMetal. It was there that some guy [actually it was Pyramaze51]recommended this band called Meyvn to me. Because I never heard ofthem I looked up their Myspace and was very impressed with what Iheard. So I immediately ordered their album. And I never regretted it.The debut album of this band from Texas sounds fantastic. The vocalsare very powerful and melodic en the rhythm section thunders throughthis album at full force. But especially the mighty guitar playing isa beauty to behold. I have never heard someone play with this muchvariation to emphasize the different moment in their songs. Thecompositions tend to the prog side of the metal spectrum but are neverneedlessly complicated. It is however especially guitarist Drew thatis stealing the show. [I did not know who of the two is doing theleads. It might be both Drew or Jon Simpson]. He really is a diverseplayer! Remember that name because it's a real talent. That the songsare not chaotic but retain their melody is telling about the writingskills of this band. This is American quality metal of the highestlevel possible! A great album that I will keep on playing. This ispure class!9.2/10Henri Serton - AARDSCHOK MAGAZINE----------------REVIEW TAKEN ...
