The songs here are generally upbeat and full of humor, making the dark, brooding tone of the subsequent INGENUE all the more surprising (and effective). Although her political outspokenness, sexual orientation, and vegetarianism have often drawn fire from country music's unflinching flame-keepers, on ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG, lang manages to convincingly demonstrate her love for country's sacred traditions while successfully breaking new ground.
Truly a "crossover" album, ABSOLUTE TORCH AND TWANG clearly maps k.d. lang's progression from the quirky, yet firmly country stylings of her first three albums to the pure pop of 1992's INGENUE, the record which elevated her to international stardom. Although recorded in Vancouver, British Columbia, the album has all the sheen of Nashville "New Country," without the insincerity and cookie-cutter lyrics. Sympathetic backing from a crack band, led by lang's long-time producer/songwriting partner Ben Mink, allows her to make full use of her impressively clear, expressive voice.
Live Recording
Producers: Greg Penny, Ben Mink and K.D. Lang.

Absolute Torch And Twang album
$10.89 File ANGEL WITH A LARIAT next to Lyle Lovett's self-titled debut, Dwight Yoakam's GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC., ETC. and Steve Earle's GUITAR TOWN. All four came out from 1986-1987 and were warning shots across the bow of a genre still recovering from the Urban Cowboy syndrome of the early '80s. Between her androgynous look and vegetarianism, Lang sent the most shock waves through Music Row's establishment.
Regardless of how she looked, LARIAT was a triumphant debut that found Lang & The Reclines updating Patsy Cline's sound when LeAnn Rimes was barely ...
| | K D Lang Shadowland CD (1988)
Absolute Torch And Twang CD music
$9.59 On her second album, SHADOWLAND, k.d. Lang matched up with legendary producer Owen Bradley on a record that simultaneously channeled the essence of Patsy Cline and helped Bradley recover from a recent illness. Switching up after her more uptempo debut ANGEL WITH A LARIAT, Lang left her back-up band The Reclines at home for SHADOWLAND, and instead went into the studio with session vets that included the Jordanaires, Buddy Emmons and Hargus "Pig" Robbins. Her use of the Nashville String Machine put a new spin on songs such as "Black Coffee" and the title track.
Lang's rich timbre of voice is coupled with extraordinary range. She turns Chris Isaak's "Western Stars" and Ray Price's "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" into cowboy ballads worthy of Marty Robbins, puts a Minnie Pearlish spin on "(Waltz Me) Once Again Around The Dance Floor" ...
| | K D Lang Ingenue CD (1992)
Absolute Torch And Twang music CDs
$8.59 "Miss Chatelaine" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female."
After many incarnations and adventurous forays into progressive musical territories, on INGENUE K.D. Lang finally found an artistic persona she was comfortable with: The Chanteuse. Lang is a vocalist of an unparalleled depth in contemporary music. Adept at phrasing and actual vocalizing, Lang's palette ranges from the subtle to the bold--always on key, on the edge, and in control. INGENUE displays a subdued K.D. Lang; a powerhouse singer who reins in potential histrionics and sings in a full, dynamic voice. Her job here is to sing, and tell the stories she needs to tell.
INGENUE coincided with lang making her personal life a public issue, and the songs on the album all reveal an inner turmoil. On "The Mind of Love," Kathryn Dawn ...
| | K D Lang All You Can Eat CD (1995)
Absolute Torch And Twang songs
$10.89 After the success of INGENUE, K.D. Lang and long-time music collaborator Ben Mink picked up and moved shop from glamorous L.A., returning to their native Canada to formulate the smoothest and most organic album of Lang's pop era. The cunningly titled ALL YOU CAN EAT shows Lang's emerging openness ("Sexuality"), but reflects a wariness of being a pop commodity. There is also the sensation that this is a self-realized album--not the gear-up for another Grammy, not a song-cycle directed to the hip confines of Los Angeles, but something of her own making.
ALL YOU ...
