Long associated with the New York avant-garde scene, Anderson often works with her friends from the art set. Such artists as David van Tiegham, Anton Fier, Lenny Pickett, and Bobby McFerrin all perform on STRANGE ANGELS. The album's highlights include the keyboard/vocal combination of "The Dream Before," a sad song about Hansel and Gretel. Anderson imagines the fabled children after their infamous witch episode. Living in Berlin and unable to relate to one another without an adversary, history simply passes them by. The peaceful "Hiawatha," a spaciously-produced song, references Elvis Presley while gently proclaiming "Starlight, starbright, we're gonna hang some new stars in the heavens tonight."
1989's STRANGE ANGELS, Laurie Anderson's first studio album since 1984's MR. HEARTBREAK, is something of a change from her previous records. For the first time, the majority of the songs are actually sung (or at least talk-sung), not spoken, and they reveal Anderson to have a fine, smooth singing voice. Her odd, customary story interludes are not omitted. They are merely shorter, integrated with the songs rather than existing in the vacuum between them.

| | Laurie Anderson Ugly One With The Jewels And Other Stories CD (1995)
Strange Angels
$11.19 Laurie Anderson's 1994 album, BRIGHT RED is the outgrowth of STORIES FROM THE NEW BIBLE, a series of tales developed by Laurie Anderson and subsequently published in book form. These STORIES were also performed at live concerts ("readings") in the early '90s. THE UGLY ONE WITH THE JEWELS was recorded at a London reading in 1993.
Accompanied by minimal instrumentation-often Anderson alone on keyboards and violin-she spins her tales. Her stories cover a wide range of topics, but somehow seem to be part of a single, ever-evolving whole. She tells of a bizarre artists' retreat on a small Pacific island ("Word of Mouth"), an ill-fated hitchhiking trip north ("The Geographic North Pole"), and the by-turns ...
| | Faith Hill Breathe CD (1999)
Strange Angels
$9.89 Faith Hill won the 2000 CMA Award for Female Vocalist Of The Year.
BREATHE won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Breathe" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. With her third album, FAITH, Faith Hill tasted pop crossover success--and she evidently liked the taste. BREATHE, Hill's fourth release, takes the pop/country stylings of FAITH to the next level. It's an appealing collection of pop, gospel, R&B, rock, and ballads, with just ...

Strange Angels
$11.49 Trumpeter/arranger Fagerquist defines the typical West Coast cool sound, and his band plays every nuance, phrase, and measure in hushed tones as a reserved, attractive, easily likable pure jazz persona. The band features such notables as alto saxophonist Herb Geller, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, pianist/arranger Marty Paich, and drummer Mel Lewis. Lesser knowns such as second trumpeter Ed Leddy, baritone saxophonist Ronnie Lang, bassist Buddy Clark, and French horn player Vince DeRosa prove their mettle amongst the tall California redwood big names. The octet plays eight reworked standards, some like "Easy to Love" much cooler ...

| | Cesaria Evora Sao Vicente CD (2001)
Strange Angels
$7.59 SAO VICENTE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Cesaria Evora, who at times has been referred to as a new Edith Piaf, turns in another masterful album with her first release of the new millennium, Sao Vicente. This album features several first-rate guest appearances, including Pedro Guerra, Caetano Veloso, Chucho Valdes, and North American blues superstar Bonnie Raitt (who, as always, delivers a remarkable performance) but none takes the stage from Cesaria. This is an album which, even when sunny and jubilant, still has an underlying theme of boundless sorrow, but in the end, the music is pure joy to the ear and the spirit. Highlights of the album include the elegant, nostalgic and sweeping opener, "Sao Vicente Di Longe" (which is the title of the European version of the album). "Dor Di Amor" best illustrates how such joyful music, with jubilant beats and horns, can be ...
