Ministry: Alain Jourgensen (vocals, guitars, programming); Paul Barker (bass, programming). Engineers: Keith Auerbach, David Ogilvie, Jeff Newell. In what many consider to be Ministry's peak, the band creates another wonderful album to follow The Land of Rape and Honey. Fusing thrash guitars with excellent synth and percussion work, Ministry lay the foundation for even more followers of the band's music. But what makes the album even more commendable is the unique flair and the avoidance of cliché elements that have brought down the guitar-heavy industrial-rock genre. Purists might argue that Ministry have given up these roots; but it's plain to see that the roots remain, and are only revamped by the necessary progression of a band that has been around for so many years. The sound is Ministry's, most definitely. ~ Marc van der Pol For its second major-label album (following THE LAND OF RAPE AND HONEY), Ministry combined elements of industrial, punk rock, heavy metal, and hard-beat techno. In doing so, the band forged the mold copied by countless other American bands--from Nine Inch Nails to Marilyn Manson. MIND opens with the one-two punch of "Thieves" and "Burning Inside." The first features a whip-fast chorus, punctuated by samples of the drill-like sound of an automatically rewinding camera, that sets off the obsessive anger of the verses. In the second, vocalist Al Jourgensen's slightly phased vocals cut across razor-sharp bursts of guitar and a massive drum sound. Both songs are fast, aggressive, and quite brilliant. "Cannibal Song" and "So What" sound like super-heavy outtakes from Public Image Limited's METAL BOX / SECOND EDITION. "Test" almost falls into the trap of white boys playing at rap but is saved by its crunching, hypnotic guitar line and screeching feedback. The record's masterstroke is "Breathe." The pummeling, double-tracked percussion leads Jourgensen's commanding vocal delivery as the song spirals on and on, the fade-out suggesting that the song could have gone on forever. If only Ministry's children sounded as good as this. An American classic.Q (12/92, p.149) - 3 Stars - Good - "..intense and challenging dance music.." One of the best albums EVER, by ANYONE! This album is so influential to me. I discovered it seven years after it came out, and it did not sound very dated at all. This is so different and better than a lot of the mainstream garbage out there. The soul and power of simple "great music" radiates through this album with an explosive charge! It is unlike any thing I have ever heard, and way better than anything Ministry made before or after (although they have other good stuff too). Al and company sat down with their minds wide open and made this masterpiece that is everything rock (if you want to call this one rock) should be. Many one letter words describe this disc: frightening, deep, cheap, amazing, fantastic, perfect, strange, minimal, maximal. It is one album to play from start to end. The vocals are the most diverse I think they have ever released, with dark topics and guest vocalists here and there. The album ends on a truly hypnotic state with "Dream Song", and other great tunes include: "Burning Inside", "Never Believe", "Cannibal Song", and "Test". Pick it up, you will not be disappointed. I really love that demonic picture of Al on the back, the stuff nightmares are made of. Submitted by Jeff (Davenport, IA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Grey from Sherbrooke This is the third review of Ministry's that I have read that contains an entry from Grey from Sherbrooke...and in the three that I've read, he refers to this disc as The Mind is a WONDERFUL Thing to Taste when, as we all know, it's called "The Mind is a TERRIBLE Thing to Taste". Though the reviews are good and thorough (albeit a bit lengthy) I would think he could get this obvious detail correct. Submitted by darin (houston, mn) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
THE BEST MINISTRY ALBUM!!!! This album is the greatest from Ministry! When I first got this album I wasnt much into it, but after a few more times of listening to the album it began to grow on me, now I love the album to death! Its so original and so fresh, they're no other band that is quite like them. The best songs on the album are "Theives" and "Burning Inside", there is even a rap rock song done RIGHT on the album called "Test". I highly recommend this album to any rock or industrial fan. Recorded at Long View Farms, North Brookfield, Massachusetts and Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California. In retrospect, White Zombie was one of the most influential metal bands of the '90s -- their breakthrough album, La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1, relied more on camp theatrics than catchy melodies or guitar riffs, and the follow-up, Astro-Creep 2000, featured an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production that camouflaged the simplicity of the music. Like many of the more popular alternative metal bands of the late '90s, Coal Chamber owe ...

After building up an intense live reputation and a rabid fan base, Siouxsie and the Banshees almost had to debut with a stunner -- which they did, "Hong Kong Garden" taking care of things on the singles front and The Scream on the full-length. Matched with a downright creepy cover and a fair enough early producing effort from Steve Lillywhite -- well before he found gated drum sounds -- it's a fine balance of the early band's talents. Siouxsie Sioux herself shows the distinct, commanding voice and lyrical meditations on fractured lives and situations that would win her well-deserved attention over the years. Compared to the unfocused general subject matter of most of the band's peers, songs like "Jigsaw Feeling," "Suburban Relapse," and especially the barbed contempt of "Mirage" are perfect miniature portraits. John McKay's metallic (but not metal) guitar parts, riffs that never quite resolve into conventional melodies, and the throbbing Steven Severin/Kenny Morris rhythm section distill the Velvet Underground's ...
