Revisited includes the same songs as the two separate studio dates called Songs by Tom Lehrer (one on Lehrer Records, reissued on a Rhino CD and the other on Reprise), except the versions heard here are taken from a concert at M.I.T. that was originally released only in England. The pianist/singer/comedian starts with a brief narrative autobiography that is as amusing as his lyrics. The songs are not significantly different from the studio versions other than minor changes in wording and the on-stage chatter between numbers, though he takes his time getting "The Irish Ballad" underway as he stops several times to add one more quip. Two bonus tracks are included featuring Lehrer with an orchestra performing songs written for the 1970s children's program The Electric Company. Not necessarily an essential CD for those who have either one of the studio versions of these songs, but it is still an enjoyable release. ~ Ken Dryden Tom Lehrer Revisited Music Tom Lehrer Revisited Review

Tom Lehrer Revisited music CDs
$16.79 The end of World War II and the swing era in 1945 was not the death of big-band jazz, but it did mark the beginning of a time in which big bands would be the exception instead of the rule in the jazz world. Of course, becoming a rarity isn't the same as becoming extinct -- and in the early 2000s, jazz-oriented big bands can still be found if one knew where to look. Recorded in 2005, Hindustan finds David Berger leading a big band 60 years after the swing era ended. Berger, who calls his orchestra the Sultans of Swing, doesn't play any instruments on this 61-minute CD -- his role is strictly that of a bandleader/arranger/composer -- and the word "swing" is applicable as a verb more than as a style of jazz. In other words, Berger & the Sultans do swing -- no doubt about that -- but they aren't playing flat-out swing as it existed in the '30s and early '40s. Hindustan is essentially big-band bop; Duke Ellington is a major influence, but so are Thad Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Lewis, and others who have done their part to make bop relevant to the big-band tradition. One of the album's highlights, in fact, is an arrangement of Jones' "No Refill." Ellington, without question, was a strong influence on many of bop's big-band arrangers; so it is no surprise that there is both an Ellingtonian element and a bop element on several Berger originals, as well as on tasteful arrangements of the standards "Too Marvelous for Words" and "The Very Thought of You" (both of which feature singer Aria Hendricks, although Hindustan is instrumental album more often than not). This derivative effort isn't the least bit groundbreaking, but it's an enjoyable demonstration of the fact that noteworthy big bands continued to exist 60 years after the swing era came to a close. ~ Alex Henderson
“To get straight to the point, this is some of the best big-band writing and playing you're likely to hear; the best I've heard from a new band since Thad Jones-Mel Lewis.” – Dan Morgenstern, The Institute of Jazz Studies "Berger draws from his Sultans of Swing immensely accomplished performances on a par with Ellington's orchestral work.” – Howard Reich, Chicago TribuneHindustan is the fourth recording of composer/arranger/conductor David Berger and his band The Sultans of Swing. This spectacular documentation of big band jazz in full swing features vocalist Aria Hendricks and 15 first-call, world-class musicians. It was recorded in Malmo, Sweden at the end of a Scandinavian road trip in September 2005. Berger, who formed The Sultans Of Swing in 1996, explains the significance of this: “Every time we go on tour the music improves daily. After a few days we surpass the highest level ...
| | Mighty Baby Jug Of Love CD (1971) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Tom Lehrer Revisited songs
$15.89 Originally released in 1971, JUG OF LOVE is the second album by Mighty Baby, featuring former members of George Martin's would-be Beatles, the Action. Released as a digipak, this Italian import edition features a killer 16-minute bonus version of " A Blanket in My Muesli."
Originally released in 1971, Mighty Baby's second and, for nearly a quarter of a century, final release is a deft, understated, and often magical synthesis of any number of musical strains. Stepping further away from the group's louder roots in the Action and taking in everything from an embrace of Sufism to further explorations ranging from Gram Parsons and the Band's country-rock to jazz and obscure folk, A Jug of Love is all the more remarkable for being a rushed effort, recorded in barely a week's time. But the group's strength in performing together for years served it well, and the resultant album, while a minor classic rather than a holy grail, is still a classic as it stands. Certainly anyone familiar with the Byrds and Spirit, to name two groups among many, won't be surprised by the end result, but the bandmembers themselves freely admitted to the influence (the cover is surely a nod to Fifth Dimension, at least), and songs like the gentle gospel-blues of the title track and the mandolin-tinged "Slipstreams" speak to it clearly. Moments like the beautiful buried harmonies that help open "The Happiest Man in the Carnival" and the subtle interplay of the musicians during the extended instrumental break on "Virgin Spring," at over nine minutes the longest of the album's tracks, show the band's evident talent well in hand. Even the fairly straightforward boogie of "Keep on Jugging" works well enough instead of simply killing time, thanks in part to a fantastic extended coda. ~ Ned Raggett
