BONA DRAG is a collection of singles and B-sides plus 1 new track.
A strong compilation of singles and B-sides, BONA DRAG is one of Morrissey's finest solo discs. While he'd never achieve the commercial or artistic heights he reached with the Smiths, Morrissey nevertheless turned out some excellent music after the Smiths breakup. (One gets the sense that the collaboration between Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, like Lennon and McCartney before them, was one of those rare pairings that quadrupled the sum of its parts.) BONA DRAG brings together material from Morrissey's solo debut, VIVA HATE, and the singles released as he worked on its follow-up, KILL UNCLE.
All the elements of Morrissey's well-known persona are present--his biting, literate wit, his world-weary vocal intonation, and his flair for dramatizing anguish, ennui, and Wildean aestheticism. VIVA HATE's biggest singles are here--the cheeky "Hairdresser on Fire," the lushly beautiful "Everyday Is Like Sunday," and the pop gem "Suedehead." The remaining songs are top-notch, too, especially the sunny, incisive "Interesting Drug" and the shuffling heartbreaker "He Knows I'd Love to See Him." As a representative sampling of Morrissey's best post-Smiths material, BONA DRAG does not disappoint.Spin (2/91) - "...It makes an uplifting whole, as album tracks, the songs flatter one another...All the things he used to condemn in the early, boring days of the Smiths, sex, dancing, cigarettes, eating, political conviction, videos, are a hoot for him on BONA DRAG..." Melody Maker - "Much of the actual content of the record suggests an artist in rude creative health....He's totally alien to the blissed-out slack-jawed baggy mood of the moment, and all the more invaluable because of it." NME (Magazine) - "...this record achieves everything it sets out to do..." great singles collection Listened to this when much younger. I'm sure lots of teens and young adults enjoy this album. Very trendy music, as sexy guitar riffs on Picadilly Pilare and Dissappointed show. Sounds like very good smiths quality. Great for depression, too! Trapped on an island? If I were trapped on an island and I could only have 1 of my hundreds of cd's? It would be Morrissey : Bona Drag. Submitted by How_soon_is_now (Rusholme, UT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Classic This album is so great, I can hardly start describing how I feel about it. I bought it a long time ago, when it came out, because I liked the song Suedehead. It's been with me ever since. It is my constant companion in the car. I know every word and every nuance and sing it wherever I go. This is what Bona Drag did to me. Morrissey isn't my all-time favorite artist, but he's up there in the top 5. This album wormed it's way into my life and now I can't imagine ever being without it. i's quite good, then This is the album that made me...well, maybe not a Morrissey fan, per se, but at least turned me onto a smatch of previously obscure tunes that quickly became personal favorites. The impetus behind my buying this album in '90 escapes me, as I wasn't familiar with even one tune. But my blind leap of faith was rewarded for, even though I was just out of my teens, I was still a moody bugger and Morrissey's incessant whine and English misery were a perfect soundtrack for my life. As I've grown on, I've continued to appreciate the tunes for what they are: well-crafted, alternately dark and whimsical pop tunes. It's a fine collection of a-sides and equally worthy b-sides, with an album track or two thrown in for full measure. Some of these tunes are not available on album elsewhere, so you should complement, or at least begin (and possibly end) your Morrissey collection here. In today's age of (add nausea here) punk-metal, rap-punk, blah blah blah, all of it being faux-punk (see any current excessively tattooed band for examples of this), real and respectable pop music such as this is a rare and welcome treat. Where is our Morrissey of today? And please don't say John Mayer. Submitted by screamingseagulls (Cincinnati, OH) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
