After his '70s excursions into funk, soul and R&B, Morrison closed out the decade by getting back in touch with his Celtic roots, an idea he would eventually explore further on CELTIC HEARBEAT, with the Chieftains. On INTO THE MUSIC, Morrison keys in on the upbeat, celebratory aspects of traditional Irish music, incorporating them into his own tunes. Consequently, this is one of the most joyous-sounding Morrison records since HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR.
He had already begun his association with Mark Isham (a key player on Morrison's mellower '80s records) and former James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, but Morrison is also assisted here by Ry Cooder (who contributes slide to the aptly named "Full Force Gale") and Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band, who enhances the aura of Celtic mysticism with his pennywhistle work. This is not to say that INTO THE MUSIC is some Celtic trad workout, just that the folk element is mixed in along with Morrison's usual grab bag of rock, pop, blues and undeniable soul.
One of Morrison's best loved albums. It was universally praised by critics at the time of it's release, following on the renaissance trail blazed by "Wavelength". Lead off by the hit singles "Bright Side Of The Road" and "Full Force Gale", Morrison was reinvigorated and expanded his touring ensemble, with over 12 people on stage, including violinist Scarlet Rivera, who had come to prominence with her distinctive playing on Bob Dylan's "Desire" album.
Recorded at Record Plant, Sausalito, California.

Into The Music album
$8.95 Quoted, recommended, and worshipped by the critics for decades, this underground masterpiece has now become part of the establishment. It cries to be listened to without interruption, which may explain why it failed to reach either the UK or US charts. It wanders and weaves, repeating themes and lyrics as if one song, yet we never tire of "gardens wet with rain," "champagne eyes," or the wonder of how Morrison can make a place like Ladbroke Grove seem so hauntingly evocative. This all-acoustic but fully arranged ...
| | Van Morrison Moondance CD (1970)
Into The Music CD music
$8.65 It's unusual for a decade-defining record to come out in that decade's first year, but that was clearly the case with MOONDANCE. While it would have been one of the finest albums of any decade, it clearly marked a turning point both for Van Morrison and for rock as a whole. Coming after 1968's expansive, acoustic, jazz-inflected ASTRAL WEEKS, MOONDANCE marks a complete about-face: instead of looking inward to the depths of his soul, Van turned his gaze towards sunnier climes, offering up a seamless disc of tightly composed and arranged tunes brimming with warmth and energy.
Here the R&B influence that had been part of Morrison's tool kit since his days fronting Them truly came to the fore at last. "Crazy Love," "Caravan," and "Brand New Day" could have been covered by any great soul singer, even as they redefined "soul" through the filter of Morrison's eclectic sensibilities. An openhearted record full of truly inspirational moments, MOONDANCE is Van at the absolute top of his game, setting the pace for everyone else to follow. Nearly every song here is a stone-cold classic, and MOONDANCE has become embedded in the collective pop consciousness ...
| | Van Morrison Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart CD (1983)
Into The Music music CDs
$9.29 Picking up where BEAUTIFUL VISION left off, this album is full of the Celtic mysticism, spiritual themes and atmospheric arrangements that characterized most of Morrison's '80s output. Again, Mark Isham is on hand to lend his support on synthesizer and trumpet for that delicate, almost-not-quite new agey touch. Van waxes philosophical, as is his wont, on such tunes as "River of Time," "Higher Than The World" and the title tune, and nobody ventures into the mystic with more success than Morrison. Held aloft by a female choir, Morrison's voice takes on a new air of maturity here. As his blues-trained voice cries out with emotions almost impossible to express with words, he relies on his own version of scat-singing; moaning, whispering, and murmuring incantatorially to articulate the SPEECH OF THE HEART.

| | Pure Michael Hedges CD (2006) Bonus Track
Into The Music songs
$7.69 Though nearly half of the 16 tracks on Pure Michael Hedges are found on another Windham Hill collection, Best of Michael Hedges, the album is still a nice overview of one of the late 20th century's most inventive acoustic guitar players. And as Hedges was predominantly a guitarist, and not a singer, most of the cuts are instrumentals, though the two vocal tracks that do make it on, "The Streamlined Man" (from 1985's Watching My Life Go By) and "I Carry Your Heart" (from 1990s Taproot, with help from Graham Nash and David Crosby), are probably the best examples of how Hedges sounded when he was singing his best. However, it's for the incredible guitar that most people listen to his music, and Pure Michael Hedges doesn't disappoint there at all. Popular pieces like "Bensusan" and "Because It's There" are both included, and are good representations of his unique, intricate style (it often sounds that there's more than one guitar playing, though there never is), and the two songs from the 1999 posthumous release, Torched, "Java Man" and "Ursa Major," show that his skill and innovation were ...
