On 1990's GRAND PIANO CANYON, Bob James and his cohorts do an excellent job of delivering exactly what fans expect. The likes of Nathan East, Harvey Mason, Jon Faddis, Randy Brecker, saxophonists Andy Snitzer and Kirk Whalum, Lee Ritenour, and Eric Gale provide subtle instrumental backup on these nine jazzy piano tracks. CANYON blends straight-ahead jazz with a bit of contemporary jazz for a well rounded and relaxing recording.
The catchy radio hit "Restoration" is a highlight. "Bare Bones" provides the album with its most jamming moment, while Ritenour's "Just Listen" and the lovely "Far from Turtle" add a soft, romantic touch. James' beautiful playing is featured throughout, though the middle of the album does drag slightly. But if you're looking for a fine late-night listen, GRAND PIANO CANYON should hit the mark.

Bob James Grand Piano Canyon Songs Grand Piano Canyon Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Awesome CD - Great collaboration Listeners with a keen ear and a preference for good music and jazz at its best need to hear this CD. It is far from the predictable sounds of its time. Regardless what the skeptics say,
Bob's genius can be heard loud and clear on this CD. I highly recommed it.
For something more over the top to give listeners a true idea of how dangerous Bob is on piano "two hands" down, playing angular complex sounding jazz of the 60s era, you may want to get his first ever record. Bob James trio. Submitted by PC (AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Better Bob James is best known for his funky lush arrangements for a multitude of performers for CTI and Columbia in the 70's and early 80's. His most famous composition is the theme for the tv. series, 'Taxi'. James' style is predictable and boring. 'Grand Piano Canyon' is probably his best record. He actually uses his left hand on the piano! If you must have some Bob James, only this one, 'Heads', and maybe, 'Touchdown' are even recommendable at all (yawn). Submitted by St.Davey (Windham, Me.) The master of lite-jazz keyboard stylings unleashes his playful side on PLAYIN' HOOKY. Bob James has long been a favorite among today's young urban professionals who find pop music a little too rambunctious and jazz just a bit too harsh. This album gives James' fans plenty to enjoy. With such distinguished guests as Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Dave Samuels, and Chuck Loeb this disc contains some solid, ...

| | Ndala Kasheba Yellow Card CD (2002)
Grand Piano Canyon MP3 Album
$20.29 Ndala Kasheba is an expatriate from the Congo who's been plying his trade in Tanzania for quite some time now. He brought with him a love of old-style Congolese rumba, some excellent skills on guitar (12- and six-string), and a strong vocal talent. Yellow Card, his Western debut recording, captures him with his full band, heavy on the guitars with the irresistible swing of the rumba. It kicks in fully on the second track, "Marinella," where Kasheba proves himself to be a fluent lead player, offering lovely runs while three voices (including his own) sing; all that's missing is the extra oomph of percussion over the drum kit. And that sets the tone for the disc -- the first track, "Kokolay," almost sounds like a prelude, a warm-up. "Mpaka Managa" is the best cut, where the horns riff ...
