(1 Customer Review)
WHY DO BIRDS SING? (1991) features many of the elements that made the first pair of Violent Femmes records so great--and even includes several songs written at the same time as the songs on those albums. "American Music" opens, one of singer/guitarist Gordon Gano's best songs and an ode to, well, American music, it highlights call and response vocals punctuated by clapping. "Out the Window" is a showcase for Gano's archetypal choppy acoustic guitar playing, which in this case is grafted onto a bizarrely cheerful song about suicide.
One of the album's highpoints is "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," the Femmes radical destruction and re-construction of Culture Club's hit single of the same name. Once again proving that the Femmes are the greatest geek-rock band in the alternative scene, WHY DO BIRDS is easily the band's best album since 1985's HALLOWED GROUND.

Why Do Birds Sing? CD music
$6.09 The Violent Femmes' sixth album, 1994's NEW TIMES, features the addition of a new drummer and is a solid addition to the band's canon. Opening with the straightforward--for the Femmes, anyway--"Don't Start Me on the Liquor," another Gordon Gano tale of decaying humans set to a jaunty beat, and a title track vaguely reminiscent of "The Monster Mash," the album settles down.
The sinister acoustic guitar base of "Breaking Up" ...

Why Do Birds Sing? album
$6.09 This follow-up to the Violent Femmes' classic debut boasts a taut, idiosyncratic, and innovative musical vision. On HALLOWED GROUND, the Femmes' minimal, acoustic guitar/bass/drums sound is fleshed out here by such unlikely instruments as celeste, marimba, Jew's harp, and banjo. The group's focused, frenetic energy is in the foreground, but singer/guitarist Gordon Gano's ...
