R.E.M.: Bill Berry (vocals, piano, drums, congas, percussion); Mike Mills (vocals, organ, harpsichord, bass); Michael Stipe (vocals, bass melodica); Peter Buck (guitar, mandolin). Additional personnel includes: KRS-One, Kate Pierson (vocals); Peter Holsapple (guitar, bass); John Keane (pedal steel guitar); David Kampers, David Braitberg, David Arenz, Ellie Arenz (violin); Paul Murphy, Reid Harris (viola); Andrew Cox, Elizabeth Murphy (cello); Kidd Jordan (bass clarinet, alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Cecil Welch (flugelhorn); Ralph Jones (acoustic bass). Recorded at Soundscape Studios, Athens, Georgia. In contrast to the directness of Green and Document, this may seem like a return to the abstractness of the early years, but that isn't the case. Out of Time is among R.E.M.'s best work -- a mature, balanced, graceful collection of pop songs quite different from Murmur and Reckoning. Buck, Berry, and Mills switch instruments frequently, keeping the music fresh and exciting. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The supporting tour for Green exhausted R.E.M., and they spent nearly a year recuperating before reconvening for Out of Time. Where previous R.E.M. records captured a stripped-down, live sound, Out of Time was lush with sonic detail, featuring string sections, keyboards, mandolins, and cameos from everyone from rapper KRS-One to the B-52's' Kate Pierson. The scope of R.E.M.'s ambitions is impressive, and the record sounds impeccable, its sunny array of pop and folk songs as refreshing as Michael Stipe's decision to abandon explicitly political lyrics for the personal. Several R.E.M. classics -- including Mike Mills' Byrds-y "Near Wild Heaven," the haunting "Country Feedback," and the masterpiece "Losing My Religion" -- are present, but the album is more notable for its production than its songwriting. Most of the songs are slight but pleasant, or are awkward experiments like "Radio Song"'s stab at funk, and while this sounds fine as the record is playing, there's not much substantive material to make the record worth returning to. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Before Nirvana's NEVERMIND closed out the year with the unexpected commercial triumph of grunge rock, R.E.M.'s OUT OF TIME was the sound of alternative music circa 1991. The smash singles "Losing My Religion"--perhaps the only Top Five US single ever to feature the mandolin as its lead instrument--and "Shiny Happy People" were the commercial face of the album. Elsewhere, however, R.E.M. makes a point of moving away from expectations, resulting in intriguing experiments like the surprisingly funky "Radio Song" (featuring rapper KRS-One), the spoken-word ambient chill-out "Belong," and the self-explanatory "Country Feedback." Interestingly, the songs most immediately identifiable as "R.E.M. songs," the jangly rockers "Texarkana" and "Near Wild Heaven," are both sung by bassist Mike Mills. Though it was quickly overshadowed by AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE during the following year, OUT OF TIME remains a fascinating portrait of R.E.M. at a pivotal point in the group's career.Rolling Stone (5/13/99, p.48) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Essential Recordings of the 90's." Out Of Time Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Timeless Classic!! Out of Time is the perfect title for a record that looked back 25 years to craft a sound that still is vital today. Only the legendary Byrds melded jangly rock with folk and psychadelia as skillfully as R.E.M. Shiny Happy People and Near Wild Heaven could have been hits in the summer of love, circa 1967. Texarkana, Half A World Away, and Losing My Religion are also in the forefront of R.E.M. classics. Along with Murmur and Reckoning, this is the pinnacle of a great band's career. Ultimate Best! Ultimate Best! I need not say more here.
I rest my case. Submitted by Johnny (I Live In A Van Down By The River) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A huge let down I've been a long time fan of REM and this review pains me. But Out of Time is easily the band's worst album.
It's especially a letdown since Murmur-Document were all drop dead classics, and Green was pretty excellent as well (after a few listens, anyway).
Sadly, this album has too much farting around with the studio and not enough songs. The review from the UK is right, only three or so "songs" on this album. They are great ones: Country Feedback, Texarkana, Near Wild Heaven and Losing My Religion, but the other seven I can do without.
Radio Song, Belong, Endgame and Shiny Happy People are easily REM's worst songs ever. The fact they're on the same album should tell you something.
Buy Murmur Automatic For The People and Document (in that order) first, then buy the rest of them. But unless you want to say "I have 'em all," or have $15 burning a hole in your pocket, stay away from Out of Time. Submitted by Ratan (Fairmont State University) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
dont believe it i heard automatic for the people before this album..then i got out of time..ill have to say while obviously not as good as automatic its still a pretty worthwhile album..i listen to it quite frequently..kind of like a companion peice to automatic Submitted by a reviewer (EDISON NJ) Was This Review Helpful? Just...NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What did they do to themselves? Please don't touch this if you like music. There are about two or three 'songs' on here. The rest are 'things'. No. Just, no. Buy Automatic For The People, Up, or New Adventures In Hifi. JUST DON'T TOUCH THIS! Submitted by a reviewer (Sevenoaks, Kent, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Personnel: Freddy Cannon (vocals); Charlie Calello (arranger, conductor); Don McGinniss, Al Capps (arranger); Glen Campbell, James Burton (guitar); Leon Russell (piano); Carol Kaye (bass); Hal Blaine (drums); The Belmonts, David Gates (background vocals). Producers include: Frank Slay, Bob Crewe, Dick Galasser, Russ Regan, Bob Feldman. Compilation producer: Cary E. Mansfield. Recorded between 1964 & 1981. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Bill Dahl. Arrangers: Al Capps; Charles Calello. Most of Cannon's best-known, and best, hits were done for Swan Records in the late '50s and early '60s. This CD, however, focuses on his post-Swan career, a period that saw him land two big hits ("Abigail Beecher" and "Action," both here naturally). All but two of these 18 tracks came out between 1964-1970. Some slight surf/hot rod influences show up on songs like "All American Girl," "Let Me Show You Where It's At," and "Beachwood City"; "In My Wildest Dreams" sounded like Gary Lewis, perhaps unsurprisingly, as Leon Russell (who also worked with Lewis) arranged. There's a remake of "Rock Around the Clock," "Beautiful Downtown Burbank" (based around a running joke on the Laugh-In TV show), and the medley of some his old hits that passed for "Charged-Up, Turned-Up Rock-n-Roll Singer"; the 1974 single "Rock & Roll ABC's" is also here. Three of the songs, including a 1967 remake of "Rockin' Robin," ...
