Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Bela Fleck, Roy Wooten, Victor Wooten. The Flecktones owe more to bebop than bluegrass, and here the group finally names their style "blu-bop." That's why Flight of the Cosmic Hippo topped the jazz, not the country, chart. The Flecktones continue to make it look easy, adding banjo power chords to "Turtle Rock" and reworking Lennon/McCartney's "Michelle." ~ Brian MansfieldQ (1/92, p.72) - 3 Stars - Good "..expertly unites Fleck's virtuoso five-string banjo with the harder, more modern sounds of the rhythm section.." Musician (7/91) - "..Fleck's jazz pedigree is impeccable..his sparkling arpeggios, popping rolls and daring counterpoint are something else again...beautiful blend of funky folk rhythms.." Flight Of The Cosmic Hippo
$9.09 Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Bela Fleck (banjo); Howard Levy (harmonica); Victor Wooten (bass); Roy Wooten (percussion). After disbanding New Grass Revival, Bela Fleck began re-creating the role of the banjo in the same way Charlie Parker redefined the role of the saxophone. But Fleck may be the least-innovative member of this quartet: Howard Levy gets chromatics from his blues harp, Victor Wooten picks banjo rolls on his bass, and Roy "Future Man" Wooten plays a Frankenstein-monster drum-machine/guitar synthesizer. For all the flash, there's little pretense; the group's astonishing musicianship keeps an "aw-shucks" accessibility that lets everybody follow the melody while they marvel. ~ Brian Mansfield The distance between Bela Fleck's work with New Grass Revival (and even his adventurous late-1980s solo albums) and this eponymous 1990 debut with the Flecktones is difficult to measure. Fleck handpicked this assembly of super-musicians, which includes Victor Wooten on bass, Roy "Future Man" Wooten on the "drumitar" (a combination drum machine/guitar ...

Flight Of The Cosmic Hippo
$5.95 Bela Fleck & The Flecktones: Bela Fleck (banjo); Howard Levy (piano, synthesizer, harmonica, ocarina, pennywhistle); Victor Lemonte Wooten (bass); Future Man (drumitar). Producers: Bela Fleck, Roy Wooten, Howard Levy, Victor Lemonte Wooten. All songs written by Bela Fleck except "Sex In A Pan" (Victor Lemonte Wooten) and "Seresta" (Howard Levy/Manfredo Fest). The Flecktones' third release, UFO TOFU, is a classy forward-thinking fusion outing that doesn't merely challenge listeners with technocratic bluster, but engages them with wit, intelligence, dynamic interplay...and a whole lotta heart. And it's a testament to Fleck's maturing talents as a composer and arranger that UFO TOFU doesn't merely project a hodge-podge of novelties and notions, but a distinctive group identity. UFO TOFU is the culmination of three-plus years of unrelenting road work, during which time virtuosos Bela Fleck, Howard Levy, Victor Wooten and Roy "Futureman" Wooten had polished their act to a fine sheen, while expanding and refining their synthesis of jazz, country, funk ...
