Gordon picks up where the Barenaked Ladies' famous demo "The Yellow Tape" left off and moves them into majors. Their first for Reprise, this witty songbook finds the Canadian five-piece to be a clever group -- charming, but not childish, yet the Barenaked Ladies are pretty close to overstepping the boundaries of silliness. The thing that keeps them in line is their sharp harmonies. Shared vocals between guitarist Ed Robertson and Steven Page are refreshing and upbeat, especially on reworked versions of "Brian Wilson," "Be My Yoko Ono," and the eternal favorite "If I Had a $1000000 Dollars." "Hello City" and "Box Set" are slick narratives, making for album standouts with its jazz-cool blend. Other shiny moments, such as "Enid" and "Grade 9," are humorous in reflecting upon adolescence, while "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" showcases the Barenaked Ladies' more romantic side. Through all the jokes, these guys are a bunch of suckers for love and such sensitivity is a great match for their quirky musical persona. Gordon is a great introduction to the Barenaked Ladies' sweet comic relief and it's sure to be a college rock mainstay. ~ MacKenzie Wilson Released at the height of the grunge era, this Canadian group's debut was unlike any other album issued in 1992. While the Barenaked Ladies' cheerful pop tends to focus on exhuberant melody, they rock harder than you would expect for a band whose sound relies so heavily of intricate vocal interplay, snapping acoustic bass and fluid acoustic piano work. Though the band has since released several very successful albums, GORDON remains the definitive Barenaked Ladies disc. Many of their best-known songs are here: including "Be My Yoko Ono," a good natured tribute to John Lennon's often misunderstood wife, a poignant reflection on the mental illness of the Beach Boy legend called "Brian Wilson" and "If I Had A Million dollars," a fun-filled song that still inspires fans to hurl macaroni and cheese at the band every time the song is performed in concert. Although the Ladies have since tried to tone down the humorous content of their music, the band has yet to surpass GORDON's perfect blend of first-class musicianship, exceQ (11/92, p.99) - 3 Stars - Good - "..[Barenaked Ladies have] a precocious familiarity with sundry pop styles, a reliable ear for a hook and an enviable grasp of harmony.." Reflex (12/15/92, p.68) - "..packed with peppy pop tunes that your standard Brit-o-phile is gonna dig.." Barenaked Ladies Gordon Songs Gordon Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews best by far I must admit I am a huge BNL fan. This cd however is there best by far, if you are just getting into BNL's music this is a must have. Submitted by linux36 (philadelphia, pa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Definitely their best album I agree with every reviewer so far: This is BNL's best album, front-to-back, bar none.
I had been a fan of BNL since seeing them at frosh week in 1991 - a time when I had no idea who they were. However, they were unbelievable in concert and I instantly became a fan of songs like "If I had a $1,000,000", "Fox on the run", and "McDonald's Girl".
From their independently released tape (I think it's now know as "The Yellow Tape"), the songs "If I had a $1,000,000", "Be My Yoko Ono", "Blame it on me", and "Brian Wilson" all made it onto BNL's first label release "Gordon" in the middle of 1992. Note that this was a time when all you heard was grunge rock (Nirvana, Pearl Jam) or poppy dance music (Snap, Black Box, C&C Music Factory). The only song from The Yellow Tape left off of Gordon was BNL's cover of Public Enemy's Fight The Power.
I was also disappointed that the band never released studio versions of McDonald's Girl (maybe there might have been some copyright issues from breaking into "Big Mac, Filet-o-fish, quarter pounder, french fries...", which is a shame, because it's a beautiful song about teen love) and Fox On The Run (again, could be legal issues... as they break into MC Rob Base and DJ Easy-Rock's It Takes Two at the end).
But to make up for this slight disappointment, the band added some great new songs, namely What A Good Boy, Box Set, The Flag, Hello City, Crazy, and Wrap Your Arms Around Me. They also added some fun songs which are quite listenable, such as Enid, Grade 9, King of Bedside Manner, and New Kid On The Block.
The band has since reached greater commercial success, and have released some other great songs (The Old Apartment, One Week, Call and Answer, etc), but never have they again captured the greatness of Gordon. It should be in everyone's collection. And it's even more incredible when you consider when they put it out (they were in their early 20's and the music of the day was nowhere in the realm of BNL - truly ground-breaking). Classic BNL Baffoonery This album brings me back to the care-free early nineties. Gordon makes me want to dust off my Cat in the Hat hat and get stupid. Submitted by Ted (Buffalo, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The legendary Gordon- who rules my world! This albumn, full of wit and charm encaptured me. Magical live, and just as good in your bedroom, less well known songs such as 'Wrap Your Arms Around Me' and 'The flag' are slighly more serious but are balanced with the funniness of 'Grade 9' and 'If I had....'
