"Bedtime Story," the third single from Madonna's Bedtime Stories album, holds the distinction of being her first U.S. single since her debut, "Everybody," to fail to crack the U.S. Top 40 (the song peaked at 42). It was the follow-up to her immensely popular hit "Take a Bow," and also one of her most adventurous and least-commercial singles. The song was co-written by alterna-goddess Bjork, and, with its electronica undertones, seemed to pre-date the material from her forthcoming Ray of Light album, as opposed to fitting in with the warm, adult-contemporary-laced urban feel of Bedtime Stories. The single comes with seven versions, the first being an edit of the album track. The remixes, however, spin the song into a whole different direction. "Junior's Single Edit," (remixed by Junior Vasquez), which is an edit of "Junior's Wet Dream Mix," sounds much more accessible and radio-friendly than the original. Had it been the official single version, it may have even cracked the Top 40. The "Orbital Mix" sounds even dreamier than the Junior Vasquez remixes, and "Junior's Sound Factory Mix" is much deeper, at times almost resembling a march. These remixes are pure dancefloor material, at times aggressive, at times ethereal, at times even trance-like. A great single, although not very commercial, but it stays true to its source, which is pure, unadulterated dance music. Also included is a B-side, the R&B album track "Sanctuary." ~ Jose Promis Bedtime Story Music Review Purchase Bedtime Story CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Madonna Vogue (1990) 4 versions

$7.49 RAY OF LIGHT won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package, and was nominated for Album Of The Year. "Ray Of Light" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video, and was nominated for Record Of The Year.
Relentlessly contemporary, RAY OF LIGHT pairs Madonna with producer William Orbit, an electronics wizard who has worked with major R&B acts and even such modern rockers as Blur and Depeche Mode. Reportedly, Madonna tried to snare Liam Howlett of high-strung techno-rockers the Prodigy into the project--Howlett claims to have turned her down. But the more dextrous, less in-your-face Orbit was probably a better choice anyway. He provides a dizzying array of soundscapes, incorporating everything from psychedelic-rock guitar to dub-reggae echo and cold, cutting techno beats for what critics are calling Madonna's most committed performance in years.
From the slow chill of the album's first single, "Frozen," to the disco-like title track, RAY OF LIGHT finds Madonna embracing the club beats that are her roots while still teetering on the edge of dance-club vogue. It also finds the singer, who has become a mother since her last studio album, in a long-untapped spiritual mode. When the inevitable comparisons are made to Madonna's previous standard-bearer, 1989's LIKE A PRAYER, that may well be the reason.
Recorded at Larrabee Studios North, Universal City, California.

Bedtime Story songs
$7.49 Madonna's remake of "Fever," from the album Erotica, was released as a single in Europe (hence the review of this French import) but in the U.S. was relegated to the B-side of "Bad Girl." "Fever" did, however, top the American dance charts. The U.S. maxi-single of "Bad Girl" contains most the tracks on this import single, save for an album edit and two others: "Shep's Remedy Dub" and "Murk Boys Miami Mix." The "Shep's Remedy Dub" is just what the title indicates, a dub mix, and the other mix offers the song with a different bassline, but still maintaining its deep house groove. A big disappointment, however, is that neither this single nor "Bad Girl" feature the video version of "Fever," which is arguably the best and is completely unavailable commercially. ~ Jose Promis
The chilly arctic epic "Frozen" was the first single from Madonna's Ray of Light, the album which finally made her a critic's darling. The maxi-single was issued with four excellent mixes, which helped the song peak at number two on the U.S. charts. The first track is the original album version, which, clocking in at 6:15 minutes, is quite long for the average single. The second track is the masterful, hypnotic Stereo MC's remix, which shuffles forward in an almost trance-like fashion, and is as good as, or better, than the original. The third mix, Victor Calderone's "Extended Club Mix," transforms the otherwise mellow tune into a frenetic, majestic 11-minute dance song whose relentless, pulsating beat keeps the groove going during its various stops and starts. The final track, William Orbit's melancholy "Meltdown Mix," is a dizzying, dreamier, more chilled-out take on the already ice cold song. Each mix does well by the original by adding quite a bit of muscle to the formula. The only thing missing on this disc would be a single edit of the club mix. ~ Jose Promis
