Ambrosia: David Pack (vocals, guitar); Chris North (vocals, keyboards); Joe Puerta (vocals, bass); Burleigh Drummond (vocals, drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Michael McDonald, James Ingram (vocals). Personnel: David Pack (vocals, guitar); Christopher North (vocals, keyboards); Burleigh Drummond (vocals, drums, percussion); Joe Puerta, James Ingram (vocals). Liner Note Author: Arthur Levy . For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. It only briefly touches on their early art rock records, choosing to concentrate instead on their early-'80s soft rock hits like "Biggest Part of Me," "You're the Only Woman," and "How Much I Feel." As a result, dedicated prog rock fans will find this collection inadequate, but for most casual listeners, it will contain everything they need and then some, since the disc is padded with three new songs that are pleasant. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. [In 2004, Warner reissued Anthology as Greatest Hits. Apart from a paper slip that wraps over the CD and says the album is called Greatest Hits, the disc is identical -- the same artwork, same remastering, and it even reads Anthology on the spine and the disc itself.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For various legal reasons, no Ambrosia recordings were released on compact disc in America until 1997's Anthology, and while it's an imperfect collection, it does offer a reasonably thorough overview of the group's career. Anthology Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Excellent Ambrosia Cure All The Ambrosia Anthology fills the need of anyone who wants "a good feel" of what Ambrosia is as a band. All their hits are included and many others that I enjoy. I own two other CDs of theirs, and will probably pick up the rest, but if one wants "the hits" of Ambrosia, buy this immediately. A great listen! Submitted by gil_knutson (Sardis, BC, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
OK, but progressive........? Sounds very sophisticated, excellent harmonious vocals, but to label this progressive is a bit too much to ask. Sounds every now and then like Steely Dan or even the Bee Gees (uh………) Submitted by a reviewer (Doylestown, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$20.59 The Art Bears were a thinking person's rock trio, unfortunately destined to be also-rans during the age of punk's ascendancy. But for an outfit operating at the margins of popular music for less than two years, it turns out that the Bears left quite an impressive legacy, as evidenced by The Art Box, a 2004 Recommended Records set celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band's inception. The collection is crammed with six CDs, not to mention a CD single and several booklets, that nearly burst the box's seams. Members of the Henry Cow/Slapp Happy aggregation, multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith, drummer Chris Cutler, and singer Dagmar Krause came together in 1978 and recorded three albums between the Art Bears' founding and breakup. These albums -- Hopes & Fears, Winter Songs, and The World as It Is Today -- are all here in remastered form (along with high-quality reproductions of the striking original cover art), as are two discs of remixes made by various artists over a six-year period, an odds'n'sods disc of live material and miscellanea, and a single ("Coda to Man and Boy") that duplicates a track from the odds'n'sods disc but is a nice souvenir anyway. The three original albums presented an adventurous mix of avant rock experimentalism, smatterings of noise and dissonance, British folk flavors, medieval imagery, and leftist, anti-corporate politics -- all distilled into the short formats of art songs with an occasional cabaret feel. In other words, not exactly Top 40 material. The Art Bears' uniqueness is immediately apparent upon listening to the first of their albums, 1978's Hopes & Fears, like all three of their studio efforts ...
