A live document of Dire Straits' 1991-92 world tour supporting the On Every Street album, On the Night works sporadically, offering enough good material to interest fans but not enough to win back the commercial audience earned by Brothers in Arms. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

On the Night album
$8.69 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
The Dire Straits' mastermind's first non-soundtrack solo album is a refreshingly diverse outing. Mellower overall than his previous fare, there's still plenty of stunning guitar work and solid songcrafting to be had here. The songs cover a lot of stylistic bases, from rock to folk, Celtic, blues and somber balladeering. The disc is full, yet its diversity ...

All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
This solid collection is a compelling career overview of one of rock's most distinctive groups. Led by Mark Knopfler, whose deadpan vocal style and stunning guitar technique characterize the band's sound, Dire Straits burst on the scene in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing." This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
On the Night album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three ...

| | Books Lemon Of Pink CD (2003) (Import)
On the Night music CDs
$29.49 Like 2002's Thought for Food, The Lemon of Pink combines experimental collage technique with an organic, folky mixture of banjo, guitar, violin, simple vocal melodies, and snippets of conversation. The collage technique snaps like that of the United States of America, but is used to introduce glitches in the melodic elements, whereas the U.S.A. attempted to subvert the tradition of ...

| | Survivor Reach CD (2006)
On the Night CD music
$15.15 For nearly two decades, not much was heard from one of the '80s top mainstream rock acts, Survivor. In the wake of 1988's Too Hot to Sleep, it seemed as if the band had fallen off the face of the earth. But with renewed interest in '80s rock circa the early 21st century, three Survivor veterans -- singer Jimi Jamison (not the "Eye of the Tiger" guy, he's the "Burning Heart" guy), guitarist Frankie Sullivan, and drummer Marc Droubay -- opted to resuscitate the band, with 2006's Reach. Unlike some other acts of the '80s who attempt to keep pace with the young pups by updating their sound (and oft-times floundering), Reach finds Survivor sticking with what they know best. And of course, that's melodic rockers with a clean production, as evidenced by such tracks as the album-opening title track and "Fire ...
| | Mike Silver Heaven In Mind CD (2006) (Import) United Kingdom
On the Night music CDs
$18.39 There is something to be said for directness in songwriting. As much as obscure metaphors and abstract imagery can be intriguing, it can be nice to have a clear statement, easily understood, to give concrete direction and purpose to the listener. However, it can also go too far. On Heaven in Mind, British singer/songwriter Mike Silver, who's been in the business since the '70s, is oftentimes so focused on conveying his actual message that he forgets that there needs to be something interesting for his audience to grab onto. It doesn't help that in the liner notes to the album, Silver adds brief explanations about where each piece came from and what it means, as if the lyrics and titles weren't enough ("Doesn't mean that he's not wishing/That he could say in terms she'll comprehend/The fundamental differences/That exist between some women and some men," he explains in "Who Wants to Be the One"?). And Silver's neither country nor folky enough that his storytelling or openness can come across as simply a characteristic of the genre; it just sounds campy, and it gets annoying rather quickly. However, ...
