VAUXHALL & I opens on the track "Now My Heart is Full," which could seem a stunning revelation from England's most notorious melancholy since Hamlet. It's not an ironic title, but, of course, with Stephen Morrissey, it's never that simple; the elegant song is full of self-deprecatory asides and dark longing, yet is also a warm and loving, lush pop track. Which is to say, it's classic Morrissey. And 1994's VAUXHALL may be the most consistently enjoyable album he put out as a solo artist, with his usual balance of literary neuroses and rapturous hooks, from the driving guitar of "Spring-Heeled Jim" to the studied brooding of "Hold On To Your Friends" to the extra-creepily genial stalking of "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" (which turned out to be his first American chart hit ever, inside or outside the Smiths).
Recorded at Abbey Road, London, England in 1993.
Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Alain Whyte (guitar, background vocals); Boz Boorer (guitar); Jonny Bridgewood (bass); Woodie Taylor (drums).
Rolling Stone (4/7/94, p.73) - 3.5 Stars out of 5 - "...for all the disturbing images, VAUXHALL is incredibly accessible pop...straightforward music fit to convey the complex dynamics of depression...." Spin (3/94, p.87) - "...Delicate acoustic textures weave through haunting drones and synthesized strings...Although the draggy tempos and lush settings make VAUXHALL sound unbecomingly mellow on the surface, Morrissey does his best to get on your nerves..." Entertainment Weekly (3/25/94, p.54) - "...A fantasy date with Britain's most ironic and monkish pop star..." - Rating: A- Q (12/99, p.82) - Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s." Option (8/94, p.114) - "...a collection of competent, appealing pop tunes..." Musician (4/94, p.87) - "...Don't laugh, but Morrissey is still in a funk...Morrissey comes across most effectively when he quits trying to be clever and speaks plainly...Here you get the singular Morrissey experience, those weirdly disarming ruminations by someone who seems to be both guileless and yet in a permanent snit..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.58) - Ranked #63 in Mojo's "100 Modern Classics" -- "It remains his most complete work to date." NME (Magazine) (12/24/94, p.23) - Ranked #26 in NME's list of the `Top 50 Albums Of 1994.' Morrissey Vauxhall And I Songs Vauxhall And I Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) A Classic I still remember when this album came out in the spring of 1994. I was absolutely blown away and could not stop listening to it. Morrissey's lyrics, of course, are brilliant, but the entire band does an amazing job. Guitarists Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer create one insanely gorgeous melody after another all the way through the record. And veteran producer Steve Lillywhite (together with Morrissey, no doubt) conjures up an intriguing atmosphere that weaves in and out of each track. This is my favorite album of all time, by any artist. Submitted by Christopher (Albuquerque, NM) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
live for this, 3.9 stars Scratch the rather dour eigth track, this is a good cd to get. Sounds are refined, and the "studio sound" is perfected from his last album. He also never ceases to be quite a vocal presence, as in Lifeguard Sleeping. Following this album, though, his wit was rather expired. Evidence of that is shown in his method of analyzing music too much. The seeds of that are shown in this cd, however they don't get in the way of its rather mature sounds.
Love Hold on to your friends, Springheeled Jim, why don't you find out.., used to be sweet Submitted by shameless (Encino, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The last great solo album I'm as big a Morrissey fan as there is - but face it, this is the last of his great works. This ranks pretty close to but doesn't quite catch his early stuff - seems like he may have peaked with Your Arsenal. Don't get me wrong, the new stuff is OK but its not the same guy that fronted The Smiths. Submitted by Brett (Fort Lauderdale) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Vauxhall And I CD music
$25.09 The album that introduced her to the world, Carmen Consoli's 1996 debut, Due Parole, shows the singer just coming into her own as an artist. Her voice is as great and expressive as anything that comes on her later records, but the lyrical maturity that is seen on Stato di Necessità, L'Eccezione, or Eva Contro Eva hasn't quite been completely developed yet. Due Parole ...

Vauxhall And I music CDs
$24.05 The release of Wendy Rule’s fifth studio album, The Wolf Sky, firmly establishes her as one of Melbourne’s most uniquely gifted and prolific artists. A passionate union of her incredible voice – moving from soaring heights to intimate whispers – and her beautifully dark and visionary lyrics, the album is strong, Earthy and Shamanic. More so than any of her previous studio offerings, it celebrates and reflects her unique live performances – a combination of music, ritual and story that continues to entice an ever growing audience into her otherworldy realm.Ten years ago, when Wendy’s first album, Zero, was released to critical acclaim and strong sales, she had already established a strong local following. Having sung in various jazz outfits since her early twenties, she was an accomplished performer, but her original music brought in an entirely different element. It was now not only her voice, but a passionate commitment to exploring the depth of the human experience through Magic, ritual and poetry that was captivating audiences. Through her musical collaboration with cellist Rachel Samuel and pianist Craig Patterson, Wendy’s music was evolving into something truly special. Zero was followed in 1998 by her second studio album, Deity. Wendy and her band toured Australia extensively, including two tours with the legendary 60’s performer, Donovan. In 1999 Wendy conceived, produced and performed in the theatrical production An Underworld Journey. A third album, World Between Worlds followed in 2000. In keeping with her previous albums, this was a deeply personal work, exploring a time of turmoil and sadness. Her moving songs were placed in a warm, evocative sound-world, the lush keyboards of previous records replaced by the acoustic beauty of guitars, strings and percussion. ...
