In an age of wretched excess, listening to DO RIGHT MAN is like receiving a postcard from a long lost friend. A legendary figure from the golden age of soul who first emerged in the late '50s, Dan Penn is best known as a songwriter, having penned such classics as "Cry Like A Baby," "I'm Your Puppet" and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man." Here, on ten superb arrangements, Dan Penn demonstrates that there's a world of difference between celebrating sensuality and writing something truly sexy, between dropping beats and laying down a collective groove, between screaming histrionics and subtle, soulful expression.
Penn's voice is a gruff malleable instrument, capable of tremendous emotional twists and turns, but it's the depth of his sincerity that stands out on confessional tunes such as "Cry Like A Man," "It Tears Me Up" and "You Left The Water Running." And on his touching rendition of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," Penn achieves a dark, poignant intensity of expression that can even hold its own--thank you very much--with the classic Aretha Franklin rendition we all know and love. But then, there isn't a single tune on DO RIGHT MAN that doesn't have that classic aura--this is the real thing.

Dan Penn Do Right Man Songs Do Right Man Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) A Classic This is one fine CD. I keep returning to it. Singer and musicians show remarkable restraint without sacrificing an ounce of feeling. Lead guitarist Reggie Young is like Zelig - his sessions are a chronicle of American pop music. This is sooooo good OK, adolescents just skip on by...you will not like this music. But for adults, this album is incredibly good. In particular, Penn's rendition of "I'm Your Puppet" is absolutely marvelous.
This is what R&B is supposed to be. Submitted by draperjv (Lenoir City, TN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A classic I was trying to find this classic cd for almost a year. When i was on the treshold of giving it up i found it on cd universe. This cd is one of my favourite all timers, Dan Penn is a gifted songwriter who´s been writing hundreds of songs, many being big hits by big soul artists. He has a laid back approach to his songs and music. The cd includes 10 tracks. My special favourites is " It tears me up " and " Dark end of the street " Dan has a lot of soul in his voice and surrounds himself with great musicians as Reggie Young, Jimmy Johnson and Delbert mc Clinton for ex. $12.59 At a time when most of his contemporaries are resting on their laurels, Bobby Rush-a 50-year veteran of the stage-continues to be one of the most exciting and creative artists in the R&B/blues arena. Rush's live shows are without parallel, replete with costume changes and comedic sketches acted out with the assistance of his lovely female dancers. In addressing a broad range of matters of the heart, Rush adopts various onstage persona-the adoring lover, the cuckold, the boastful stud-delivering all with a knowing wink that assures the audience that he's in on the joke. In the context of today's all too predictable and sanitized blues market, it's easy to understand why audiences new to Rush's performances often find them novel or even bewildering. Unique they are, but Rush's signifying, jesting, and double entendré jiving are at the heart of the blues, as exemplified by forbears such as Charley Patton, Memphis Minnie, Louis Jordan, and Howlin' Wolf. Bobby Rush-it's pronounced as one three-syllable name-calls his music "folk funk," an apt description for a blend that's both decidedly modern and deeply rooted in tradition. Over the decades he has consistently updated his show by incorporating new styles-jump blues, Chicago style deep blues, soul, funk, and even hip-hop-into a fresh mix. At the same time, his original compositions often stem from his dipping into the well of folk wisdom, as exemplified by songs like "What's Good For the Goose is Good for the Gander Too." The son of a preacher man, Bobby Rush was born Emmet Ellis, Jr., ...
