David Byrne's curiosity knows no bounds. As frontman and principal songwriter for the Talking Heads, Byrne's creative outreach encompassed the best aspects of new wave rock, rootsy funk and exploratory electronics. Together with the Heads and producer Brian Eno, Byrne brought African music and sounds from around the globe into common usage. And as leader of an all-star Latin big band, Byrne sought to reveal the mystery and majesty of Afro-Cuban music to a wider audience.
For DAVID BYRNE, the songwriter distills his pan-cultural focus into the kind of stripped-down musical stylings and enigmatic, quirky narratives that made his formative work with the Talking Heads so fascinating. From the ominous opening beats of "A Long Time Ago," the album reprises the singer's concerns with spiritual transformation and renewal in an increasingly hostile world. "I can barely touch my own self/how could I touch someone else?/I am just an advertisement/For a version of myself," he preaches on "Angels," a sort of end-of-the-west/Waiting For Godot epic.
Speaking more from the heart and less from the head than on previous recordings, songs like the hard-driving "Crash," the moody "A Self-Made Man" and the dancing "Back In The Box" explore themes of insecurity, self-pride and escapism respectively, while "My Love Is You" is one of the simplest, most tender love songs Byrne's ever penned. "You & Eye" is Byrne's humorous reply to his early Heads' song "Heaven," and portrays Hell as a necessary antecedent, over an infectious soukous groove. The concluding "Strange Ritual" and "Buck Naked" portray spirituality as both a potentiallly insular experience, and a child-like act of sharing and surrender. Byrne once told a writer, "I don't always know what I'm talking about, but I know if a word is wrong," and while the musical pleasures of DAVID BYRNE are instantly apparent, the depth of meaning accrues only over several listenings.

Rolling Stone (7/14/94, p.110) - 3.5 Stars - "...Amid an altogether first-rate record that's both raw and disciplined...those more direct songs strip away the catalog of eccentricities and circle behind the enigma to reveal the man, David Byrne..." Spin (9/94, p.141) - Highly Recommended - "...No longer practicing cross-cultural cryogenics, Byrne simply dashes DAVID BYRNE with essence brought back from his musical travels..." Entertainment Weekly (5/27/94, p.88) - "...this fourth solo album since the [Talking] Heads' demise is his most stripped-down effort in ages....It's nice to hear a gimmick-free Byrne, but bear in mind that straightforward songs from this guy are still fairly twisted by any reasonable standard..." - Rating: B+ Dirty Linen (12/94-1/95, p.69) - "...The former Talking Head is in fine form, sounding unusually desperate in his appealingly vulnerable way, imparting mega poetry (sometimes in a slithery sing-speak) that from other mouths would most certainly sound affected..." Option (10/94, p.96) - "...this album gives a whole new musical framework to his persona. Lyrical themes are still skewed; a poetic look at an alternate universe in which love is never what it seems..." David Byrne
$11.65 David Byrne's first release after the breakup of the Talking Heads is not only a logical progression from their final album, NAKED, it's his first truly pop-oriented solo work. (THE CATHERINE WHEEL was a dance score, and MUSIC FROM THE KNEE PLAYS a collaboration with avant-garde composer Robert Wilson based on New Orleans second-line music.)
Built on his recent fondness for Latin and Afro-Cuban musical styles (Byrne founded the Brazilophilic Luaka Bop label around this time as well), REI MOMO is half music lesson--the liner notes explain which songs are sambas, cumbias, etc.--and half late-period Talking Heads album. The combination works surprisingly well, with the highlight being the witty "Make Believe Mambo," co-starring Kirsty MacColl, who would later make her own album of Latinate pop, 2000's TROPICAL BRAINSTORM. This track and others sound so much like tunes from NAKED that clearly Byrne simply didn't need the Heads anymore.

| | David Byrne Uh-Oh CD (1992)
David Byrne
$11.65 The music swings, always with a sense of fun. Byrne's metaphysical lyrics mesmerize as usual, and the art student from the grimy city once again manages to take flight on his organic world-beat rhythms. The influences here run rampant: "She's Mad," for instance, harks back to early Heads--determined and primitively crunchy--and then suddenly turns into a breezy samba.
The album title comes from Byrne's fiercely sung "Something Ain't Right," but everything IS right on UH-OH.
After years of musical experimentation and adventures into world music, David Byrne ...
| | David Byrne Feelings CD (1997)
David Byrne
$12.49 David Byrne's years of sponging up various musical styles and his sharp, eccentric, occasionally bleak sense of humor make for an outrageously eclectic album, with several producers, and collaborators as diverse as Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale of Devo (lending their uniquely mechanical, robotic sound to "Wicked Little Doll"), trip-hoppers Morcheeba, and pop siren Paula Cole.
FEELINGS is a splendid patchwork of an album. "Gates of Paradise" takes a country & western song and mixes in a huge helping of trip hop, a dash of jungle music, and a pinch of punk. "Daddy Go Down" has a curious blend of Indian sitar, Cajun fiddles, and hip-hop scratching. The trippy, lighthearted sound offsets cynical lyrics and an intriguingly dark underbelly.

| | Paul McCartney Back To The Egg CD (1979) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; United Kingdom
David Byrne
$7.49 Dutch remastered rerelease contains three bonus cuts--"Daytime Nighttime Suffering," "Wonderful Christmastime," and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reggae."
BACK TO THE EGG features 2 songs performed by the "Rockestra," a McCartney project that collected a cast of star performers (Pete Townshend, David Gilmour, etc.) and put them in an "orchestral" setting (ie. string section, horn section, piano and percussion sections). The two songs are "Rockestra Theme" and "So Glad To See You Here." Though he's got an old school Entertainer streak a mile wide, in evidence ever since his early Beatles cover of "Til There Was You," McCartney never forsook his rock & roll roots. Consequently, even though he dished out his fair share of frothy pop ditties with Wings (of which there are a few fine examples here), he's always been capable of rocking out whenever the spirit moves him. In sharp contrast to much of the later Wings output, BACK TO THE EGG is full of bash-em-out, no-nonsense, guitar-driven rockers like "Getting Closer" and "Arrow Through Me." Even when he's indulging in droll whimsy on the order of "Old Siam, Sir" he sounds like he's ready to explode. Notable exception to all this four-on-the-floor business: "Daytime Nightime Suffering," a memorable, melodic examination ...
| | Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road CDs (1973) Bonus Tracks; SACD Hybrid
David Byrne
$19.59 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Generally regarded as Elton John's masterpiece, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD is a double-album (on one CD) that includes several of his signature songs alongside a sprawling array of lesser-known (but by no means lesser) tunes. The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. "Candle In The Wind," an elegy for Marilyn Monroe, which didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. The fact that it wasn't released as a single at the time is testimony to the wealth ...
| | Fall Out Boy Take This To Your Grave CD (2003)
David Byrne
$10.05 Originally released in 2003 and reissued in '05 (shortly before the band's major label debut), Fall Out Boy's first full-length album, TAKE THIS TO YOUR GRAVE, is a remarkably assured initial outing. One of many acts in the early-2000s emo boom, the Illinois ensemble distinguished itself from the pack with tight musicianship and a keen sense of melody. Rather than halfheartedly attempting to cling to its hardcore roots, like some of its peers, Fall Out Boy is simply out to make catchy, affecting rock here, as witnessed through glorious pop-punk moments such as "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy" and "Saturday." While frontman Patrick ...

David Byrne
$39.49 Additional personnel includes: Annie Huchrak (vocals); Stuart Gordon (violin, viola); Steve Saunders (euphonium); Peter Phipps (drums).
Remastered Japanese edition features original cover art on mini LP-style packaging.
In the XTC canon, THE BIG EXPRESS (1984) and its predecessor MUMMER are generally overlooked as merely the two albums between the more commercially successful ENGLISH SETTLEMENT and SKYLARKING. THE BIG EXPRESS is, in fact, a more consistent album--if only because it isn't quite as ambitious--and it contains at least two absolute classic XTC songs, "All You Pretty Girls" and "Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her." ...
