On Backbone, a set of obvious dance tracks, saxophonist Boney James resembles Grover Washington, Jr., both on tenor and soprano. ~ Scott Yanow
Saxophonist Boney James has yet to develop his own musical personality. On Backbone, James does his best to imitate Grover Washington, Jr., both on tenor and soprano. The material on this set of obvious dance tracks is routine, his backing musicians sound faceless and anonymous, and James does little to uplift the music. Even in the pop music world, Boney James' lack of individuality (if it continues) might eventually cause a problem. ~ Scott Yanow

Backbone album
$9.09 Taken in small doses, Boney James can be enjoyable to listen to. The Grover Washington-influenced saxophonist always sounds soulful, sincere, and passionate playing over R&B-ish rhythms. The problem is that James sounds virtually the ...
| | Boney James Seduction CD (1995)
Backbone CD music
$8.85 Boney James comes from somewhere over in the easy listening corner of jazz, with rhythms bordering on funk in one direction and soft soul in the other, with a lot of programmed drums (very well done) and deep, dark synth bass. Sometimes a male voice will venture out into the mix, but this isn't a particularly significant portion of the program -- just the right sort of sound for this kind of laid-back, late-night, easy listening material. James himself handles alto, tenor, and soprano sax duties with ease, playing relaxed, weaving lines throughout each cut and ...

| | Boney James Sweet Thing CD (1997)
Backbone songs
$8.89 Saxophonist Boney James plays pure, mostly instrumental "slow jams"; basically "Quiet Storm"-style smooth jazz/R&B. "East Bay" is a case in point--a mellifluous alto saxophone lilts along above a slow, funky groove. The mood is mellow in the extreme--this album would be a good choice for setting a romantic mood. "Within Attraction" is another relaxing tune, opening with a spare, drums-only introduction, ...
| | Boney James Body Language CD (1999)
Backbone album
$9.89 Smooth jazz saxophonist James shares more with Kenny G than just a haircut. Like the notorious Mr. G, he's adept at combining pop, jazz and contemporary R&B. James' sax lines drip lugubriously from his slick, glossy arrangements. Sparkling digital synth and programmed rhythms provide a softly syncopated ...

Backbone CD music
$13.15 Goat Hill Junket recalls Anthony Wilson to the forefront of his nonet playing five new originals and three arrangements with memorable melodies and great ensemble textures. Wilson and his ensemble swing with the dynamics of older styles of jazz on songs that create their own melodic world. His resonant guitar leads on an innovative arrangement of "Here's That Rainy Day" and further ...
| | Bobo Stenson Serenity CDs (2000)
Backbone music CDs
$22.89 Over its last two albums, Reflections (ECM 1516) and War Orphans (ECM 1604), the Bobo Stenson Trio has enveloped itself in a study of chromatic lyricism and modal architecture that balances the three traditional jazz elements for alchemy -- rhythm, harmony, and melody -- the organization of space within the composition. On Serenity -- the group's most ambitious project to date and Stenson's ever -- the Bobo Stenson Trio (Bobo Stenson, piano; Anders Jormin, bass; Jon Christensen, drums) has taken the results of its earlier explorations along this line and transformed them into an entirely new kind of spontaneous compositional terrain, one that holds balance for the space between players rather than on individual contributions of sound. The fact that this methodological apparatus has worked lyrically with adherence to Western scale and melodic invention is a surprise; that it has deepened over time as the band's communication and sense of adventure develops is a wonder. Over two CDs, Stenson proves his trio is capable of realizing spatial improvisation in the context of not only their own compositions and improvisations, but within the constructs of composers such as Wayne Shorter ("Sweet Pea"), Hanns Eisler ("Der Flaumenbaum"), Alban Berg ("Die Nachtigall"), Silvio Rodriguez ("EL Mayor") -- a Stenson favorite -- and Lorens Brolen, whose two-part "Polska of Despair" unites each of the CDs in the package and the recording date as a whole. Given the ...

| | Luca Bonvini Atempore CD (1997)
Backbone songs
$11.39 An usual recording, with mixed results, Italian Luca Bonvini fronts a trio with bassist Ares Tavolazzi and percussionist Steve Argüelles through 13 impressionistic landscapes. Bonvini performs alternately on trombone, sackbut, slide trumpet and guqin (a 7-string Chinese zither). There are segments that devolve to new age warbling, but by and large this is an interesting project, a bit off the beaten path. Bonvini sounds something like a minimalist Miles on slide trumpet, and his trombone technique is competent, if undistinguished. His sackbut sounds much like a French horn, while his performance on guqin snares with its attractive atmospherics. The percussion of Argüelles is well highlighted throughout. Ultimately, it is the concept and the arrangements, rather than the individual soloists, which hold the most interest. ~ Steve Loewy
