1975 turned out to be a major year for Ron Wood. He split from his longtime band of drinking buddies, the Faces, became a full-time member of the Rolling Stones(taking Mick Taylor's recently vacated spot), and he released his second solo album, NOW LOOK. It's pretty surprising that Wood even had time to put an album together, let alone one that was as strong as his debut, I'VE GOT MY OWN ALBUM TO DO. Although it's produced by soul singer Bobby Womack, NOW LOOK followed in the same loose rock 'n' roll direction as its predecessor. The album contains such ragged rock highlights as "I Got Lost When I Found You" (penned by Womack) and "Breathe on Me," the latter containing backing vocals by Keith Richards.

There must have been something in the water in 1970s Memphis. Not only did the town turn out an unprecedented amount of great R&B, it also hosted a sterling power-pop scene including Big Star, Tommy Hoehn, Van Duren, and Anglophile quartet the Scruffs. Led by McCartney-esque vocalist Stephen Burns, the Scruffs mixed Beatle worship, Big Star-ish rockers, and Raspberries-like pop on their 1977 debut album, WANNA MEET THE SCRUFFS? which became a power-pop cult classic. The Scruffs split up in '79 (though Burns would lead a new version decades later) but the melodic charms and punchy pop hooks of this album are a timeless treat.

Stethoscopic Notion is above-average early 21st century psychedelic music, not anything that offers significant new variations on the form, but well-executed. It's more song-oriented than much such psychedelic revivalism, with full Los Angeles-style guitars and harmonies that are redolent of the Byrds and other Byrds-inspired acts down the ages. Oyvind Holm's high, reedy vocals have been justly described as Lennon-esque, and the insertion of bits of playful brass and whimsical, colorful lyrics also draw comparisons to the Beatles' 1967 period. The problem Dipsomaniacs come across is a common one: They make able nods to both Californian and British practitioners of the psych-pop art form, but it's not easy to find an essence which is distinctly Dipsomaniacs, rather than a distillation of influences.
