In 1993, two years after Blood Sugar, former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro joined up, but it was still another two years before One Hot Minute appeared, due to various personal problems. Navarro's metallic guitar shredding should have added some weight to the Chili Peppers' punk-inflected heavy-guitar funk, but tends to make it plodding. By emphasizing the metal, the funk is gradually phased out of the blend, as is melody; the grinding chant of "Warped" is hardly as twisted as anything on Freaky Styley, or even "Give It Away." The ballads "My Friends" and "Transcending" are blatant attempts to hold on to the mainstream audience gained by "Under the Bridge," but the melodies are weak and the lyrics are even more feeble. One Hot Minute is as musically ambitious as Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but is even more unfocused, which means it provides the fewest thrills of any of the group's albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Following up the multiplatinum Blood Sugar Sex Magik proved to be a difficult task for The Red Hot Chili Peppers. After guitarist John Frusciante left, his first two replacements, Arik Marshall and Jesse Tobias, each served very brief tenures. Musically, One Hot Minute is as ambitious as Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but is even more unfocused. Coupled with the sense that The Chili Peppers are taking their music far too seriously, One Hot Minute provides the fewest thrills of any the group's albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Like the legendary Spinal Tap's inability to hold onto a drummer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have grappled with a revolving guitarist problem since the 1988 death of Hillel Slovak. Former Jane's Addiction axe-man Dave Navarro climbs aboard the Chili Pepper Express for ONE HOT MINUTE, which also marks the return of Rick Rubin to the production helm. Navarro's arrival coincides with a more experimental approach by the group. The transformations don't so much alter the funk-based sound of the band as they strain it through an ethereal colander of radical time changes. "Warped," the first single and leadoff cut, demonstrates this with a balls-to-the-wall adrenaline rush that abruptly concludesRolling Stone (10/5/95, p.67) - 3.5 Stars - Good Plus - "...Now their belief in the power of jamming, innovation and spontaneity is fully unleashed....After a 10 plus-year career, they're realizing their potential at last..." Red Hot Chili Peppers One Hot Minute Songs One Hot Minute Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Different But Awesome! I remember buying this album when i was 14 on cassette and literally wearing it out and eventulally getting it on cd.How many times can the old school fans like myself and others explain to the new fans that Califorincation,By The Way,and Stadium Arcadium are complete crap. One Hot Minute was there last great album, the hell with Frusciante he blew his chance and went on his heroin binge because fame and respect were to much for him to handle,so then he comes back to bring the band straight down the crapper,Stay away from the new albums and keep it Old School. It's Red Hot!!! Okay, I don't understand why everyone (well not everyone) hates this album and shuns it-I mean even Anthony disregards it as being an 'experiment' of an album. I think this was amazing! My favourite RHCP album has always been BSSM, but after hearing this I had doubts! Okay so perhaps maybe the whole album isn't flawless, but 'Warped', 'One Hot Minute', 'Transcending' and 'Coffee Shop' are AWESOME! They're just proper, heavy rock tracks-the guitars are so amazing and trashy on those and Flea's pretty heavy on the bass. Oh and if you want RHCP funk, try 'Falling Into Grace' and 'Aeroplane'. It's a very deep, intense album, and 'Warped' is my favourite track off it. Contrary to what many think, I think it's very similar to BSSM, and definitely beats Caifornication and perhaps By The Way. I think the reason it's 'ridiculed' is perhaps due to Dave Navarro featuring on guitar rather than John Frusiante?? Navarro's what probably gave it that slightly darker, weirdo feel. Anyways, I would definitely recommend this album to anyone into rock especially if you're a RHCP fan! It's proper 90s RHCP rock, so go get it and ROCK OUT! Ooh, plus the video for 'Warped' is worth taking a look at heehee:P Submitted by Avalon (London) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent album Wow... "one would feel listening to One Hot Minute as if the band just don't know what they are doing" - I guess you mean YOU just don't know what they are doing. So please speak for yourself (no offense).
I can see (hear, actually) why many fans of the band won't like this album. It's quite different from their previous work, and most tracks will not fit in the FM stations that used to play "Give It Away" over and over. Also, a few tracks don't seem to make much sense by themselves ("Pea", for example), but go well among the others. In other words, it's an album you shouldn't play in shuffle mode. Sit back and listen to it as a single piece.
Comparing to other albums, if you really love the hits from Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, etc., you have a good chance of hating One Hot Minute. If you like the odd tracks better, give this album a try. If you're not sure, try Stadium Arcadium first, I think it lies somewhere in between.
To give you an idea of my point of view, my favorites in BSSM are "The Power of Equality", "Breaking the Girl", "The Righteous & The Wicked" and "My Lovely Man". I didn't quite like Californication, because it sounds very much like BSSM - but I do have it in my collection. And I didn't even buy By The Way because to me it sounds exactly like Californication, I couldn't find anything new in it. Submitted by vini.mat.acc (São Paulo, SP, Brazil) Was This Review Helpful? Underrated, overlooked RHCP album If you like RHCP solely because of John Frusciante's guitar riffs, then I guess this really isn't the album for you. But in my opinion this album showcases RHCP's peaks of aggression and songwriting ability. Dave Navarro blends his Jane's Addiction rock-style with the punk-funk Peppers' alum. One Hot Minute ranks as the Peppers' 3rd best album, next to Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication.
Standout tracks: Warped, Shallow Be Thy Game, Deep Kick, Aeroplane. Submitted by Brandon (Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows.
