Unknown Contributor Role: Babyface. Perhaps Madonna correctly guessed that the public overdosed on the raw carnality of her book Sex. Perhaps she wanted to offer a more optimistic take on sex than the distant Erotica. Either way, Bedtime Stories is a warm album, with deep, gently pulsating grooves; the album's title isn't totally tongue-in-cheek. The best songs on the album ("Secret," "Inside of Me," "Sanctuary," "Bedtime Story," "Take a Bow") slowly work their melodies into the subconscious as the bass pulses. In that sense, it does offer an antidote to Erotica, which was filled with deep but cold grooves. The entire production of Bedtime Stories suggests that she wants listeners to acknowledge that her music isn't one-dimensional. She has succeeded with that goal, since Bedtime Stories offers her most humane and open music; it's even seductive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine For Madonna, pop music is the canvas of her greatest aspiration. While some critics might be ready to write her off, BEDTIME STORIES reasserts Madonna's claim to the R&B/dance floor turf she ceded to others as her own productions became elaborately self-conscious. And where performers like R. Kelly filled the breach with risque, sexually explicit fare, BEDTIME STORIES marks Madonna's return to a more stylized, elegant form of R&B. Not that Madonna has gotten herself to a nunnery, as the soft-focus ooohing and aaahing of "Inside Of Me" demonstrates, but the overall approach on BEDTIME STORIES is less carnal, more romantic (like the difference between the Supremes and Salt N' Pepa). But in collaborating with innovative producers such as Babyface and Dallas Austin, Madonna has again positioned herself on the cutting edge of modern R&B (compare the layered, collage-like production of "I'd Rather Be Your Lover" and "Human Nature" to Dallas Austin's innovative collaborations with Joi on THE PENDULUM VIBE, or, for that matter, with the eerie "Bad Baby" from P.I.L.'s METAL BOX). The spooky "Sanctuary" samples Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" to create an African backdrop for Madonna's tale of earthy devotion, while the Icelandic diva Bjork's elliptical "Bedtime Stories" propels Madonna way beyond the limits of language on this crafty, near Eastern textured arrangement. The Oriental-flavored R&B of "Take A Bow" provides a confessional epilogue for this delicately-mannered program.
Rolling Stone (12/15/94, pp.93-94) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...Madonna has come up with some awfully compelling sounds....lush soul and creamy balladry....Bass-heavy grooves pushing along when more conventional sentiments threaten to bog it down..." Musician (12/94, pp.91-92) - "...BEDTIME STORIES is closer to her first three albums, putting a heavier emphasis on pop and dance content than on straight-up soul....BEDTIME STORIES doesn't raise hackles or cultivate controversy....It simply concentrates on the music..." Village Voice (2/28/95) - Ranked #26 in the Village Voice's 1994 Pazz & Jop Critics Poll. New York Times (Publisher) (1/5/95, p.C15) - Included on Stephen Holden's list of the Top 10 Albums Of '94 - "...Easily Madonna's best album..." NME (Magazine) (12/24/94, p.23) - Ranked #30 in NME's list of the `Top 50 Albums Of 1994.' NME (Magazine) (10/29/94, p.47) - 9 (out of 10) - "...Initially sweet and polished, BEDTIME STORIES is ultimately her most lasting LP to date..." Madonna Bedtime Stories Songs Bedtime Stories Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews One of my favorite CDs Simply a sensual, mature CD that is Madonna at her peak. It has legs and sounds as fresh today as it did in 1994 when it was released. Submitted by Paul (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Great Album! Bedtime Stories wasn't Madonna #1 album. I can't say that all the songs were good but I know that Take A Bow is the best love song ever made; Secret is classic song. Forbidden Love was brilliant. I still believe that this song should have been released as a single instead of Bedtime Story. My brother adores Survival and I agree with him. Don't Stop was great too.
Bedtime Stories is definitely the most underrated album of the 90's. Submitted by Irina (Ternopil, Ukraine) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great job Madonna was gorgeous on this album - sexy and romantic in one!
Take A Bow is still my favorite ballade from Madonna. I also adore Secret, Don't Stop, Survival, Forbidden Love.
Forbidden Love should have been released as a single Submitted by Irina (Ternopil, Ukraine) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
great production This is my favorite Madonna album. Although I read somewhere Madonna was not to fond of it overall because of the album having various producers on it, I feel it is her best. Lyrically it's very personal and deep. Listen to Inside of Me..touching. And good vocals. Submitted by emailmewhenuwish (Brooklyn, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
bedtime hits The song don't stop sums up the rest of the lush sounds here, and the r@b beats. Very smart move to include bedtime story written by the wonderful Bjork.
The jazzy feel of this album is so effective, and seems to be influenced by janet jackson, and other r@b moguls, the contribution of babyface helped give the album a lovely vision as well. Submitted by babyblue (encino, ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bedtime Stories
$12.79 Additional personnel: Diamond D, Guilty Simpson, Aesop Rock, Madlib, Prince Po, Vinnie Paz, Chali 2na. An underground legend, Percee P was in the rap game for close to 20 years without an album of his own, instead shining on a handful of singles and guest appearances, consolidating his rep in freestyle battles, and permanently posted outside of New York's Fat Beats record store selling his joints directly to fans. With the release of the aptly titled PERSEVERANCE, Stones Throw gives hip-hop-heads and Percee himself the debut album they deserve. Produced entirely by indie-rap hero Madlib and featuring a tight list of guest MCs (including Diamond D, Aesop Rock, Vinnie Paz, Chali 2na, Guilty Simpson, and Prince Po), PERSEVERANCE is gem that's been a long time coming. It took almost 20 years since John Percy Simon, aka Percee P, first started rapping for him to put out his first full-length record. This wasn't, however, for lack of trying: Percee spent much of the '80s and early '90s trying to land a deal, making some guest appearances on the way, but to little success. Still, his resilient self-promotion and impressive flow eventually got him noticed ...
