Joni Mitchell marks her return to the Warner Bros./Reprise label--which released her first four albums through BLUE--by recording an authentic Joni Mitchell album. The best elements of each stylistic phase are now fully integrated within a band context--but the singer-songwriter has refocused attention on her husky contralto and spatial acoustic guitar tunings.

TURBULENT INDIGO is a masterpiece of contrast and moods, brilliantly paced and arranged, as Mitchell confronts the darkening clouds on America's horizon, but not with a canvas of dark foreboding. Mitchell paints her epic in discreet pastels, and lonely bursts of instrumental color-- TURBULENT INDIGO makes the medicine go down easy, without giving in to slacker nihilism or new age pathos.

On "Sex Kills" she essays a litany of problems without solutions, as Latin percussion, tolling bass, dreamy synths and distant distorto guitars serve to amplify the air of menace...the sound of her voice the only outpost of lyric calm or order. But "How Do You Stop" follows with tales of success hangovers, a tapestry of country guitar and chi chi Philly soul. Throughout TURBULENT INDIGO, Mitchell's wayward pilgrims wrestle with doubts, but come out in the end on the side of Job, and endure with grace. Just gorgeous, personal music--a new peak for Joni Mitchell.

TURBULENT INDIGO won 1996 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Album and for Best Recording Package.

Rolling Stone (12/15/94, p.98) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...TURBULENT INDIGO is Mitchell's best album since the mid-'70s and a work that is highly musical, poetic, and very, very sad..."
Entertainment Weekly (11/25/94, p.77) - "...TURBULENT INDIGO is full of verbal turbulence. The melodies, however, are among her most dreamily pretty....it makes Mitchell's controlled fury all the more potent..." - Rating: B+
Q (12/94, p.136) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...[recalls] the wafting soundscapes of 1976's HEJIRA, with gentle, controlled feedback, Pastorius-styled bass...tumbling sax patterns and walls of acoustic guitars providing a dramatic backdrop for Mitchell's bold lyrical imagery..."
Down Beat (3/95, p.49) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...the songs Mitchell elegantly delivers on TURBULENT INDIGO are distinctively and inimitably her own....saxophonist Wayne Shorter...stretches out..."
Musician (12/94, pp.92-94) - "...has concocted her most compelling album in years....Most of the tracks revolve around Mitchell's signature guitar needle-point, with its brooding-sky open tunings, and rhythmic pulses summoned at the palm of her hand....TURBULENT INDIGO is a thing of deep, dark beauty..."
Mojo (Publisher) (1/95, p.53) - Included in Mojo's "25 Best Albums of 1994" - "...a soulful, swinging record - featuring [Mitchell's] new nicotine-rasped tone - and her best in ages."

Customer Turbulent Indigo Reviews

Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars one of my best albums!
Once you listen to this album, you'll never regret buying it. The best Joni Mitchell songs here, for sure, following her woodstock years. (Very accessible too). She may get a bit sentimental or overly conscious, but I think that's what so beautiful about her music. Highlights: How do you stop? feat. seal backing vocals Sunny Sunday Sex Kills Magdalene Laundries

5 stars Same feel, different color
The music offered on this album shows the obscure side of Joni Mitchell. Her voice has changed, it gives this cd a dark edge. Turbulent Indigo marks the stunning return of her acoustic guitar to center stage, something that misses in her 80's work.

Joni Mitchell Night Ride Home CD  (1991)

Turbulent Indigo
CD $7.85  5 stars Top 500
Released around the time that Seattle's grunge movement was exploding in full-blown angst, NIGHT RIDE HOME boasts a lost carnival of characters that wander through, seeming especially poignant. In the '60s when another angry, lost generation reigned, Mitchell's painterly portraits reflected the troubled times. More than two decades later, her songs mirror the mood swings of an aging generation no more sure of their footsteps than they were in their youth. A quiet, restless album that evokes the electric stillness before a summer storm, NIGHT RIDE HOME looks back to Mitchell's jazzier '70s endeavors like COURT AND SPARK. Despite the album's softer turn, the fey warble of alto sax is not nearly as prominent (or intrusive) as on Mitchell's 1998 TAMING THE TIGER. "Come In From the Cold" is one of Mitchell's finest songs, a lilting memory play of adolescence, desire and mature revelation. The title track is a sultry ...

All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level. Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of the masterful Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass weave their way seductively through Joni's melancholy interpretation of "Sweet Sucker Dance." The high point of the album, however, is the funky "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" which benefits from Pastorius' gurgling bass groove and dynamic horn arrangement. The album finale is the beautiful ...

Joni Mitchell Don Juan's Reckless Daughter CD  (1977)

Turbulent Indigo
CD $6.39  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell never really considered herself a folkie. While adding jazz textures to her literate lyrics in the mid-'70s may have confused her fans and infuriated jazz purists, to her it was as natural as rain. On DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER, she collaborated with the cream of the '70s jazz crop including Wayne Shorter, Don Alias, Airto, Larry Carlton and a young bassist by the name of Jaco Pastorius. The sound on DON JUAN is lean, with a stripped-down band largely relying on bass and percussion to back up Mitchell's voice and acoustic guitar. Pastorius in particular proves himself an able and sensitive accompanist, flexing his considerable chops, but also laying low and letting his singular tone do all the work when necessary. Wayne Shorter's soprano sax blends perfectly with Mitchell, the stark, emotional sound complementing her frank vocal style. The percussion-only backing of "Dreamland" and the instrumental "The Tenth World" ...

All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell draws freely on her heroes and influences, and in her turn inspires and informs the work of countless others; thus are the genes of our musical heritage passed on to new generations. The love of jazz glimpsed in COURT AND SPARK and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is wanton in HEJIRA. The arrangements are loose and the melodies seductively free-flowing. ...

Joni Mitchell Taming The Tiger CD  (1998)

Turbulent Indigo
CD $5.95  5 stars Audio Samples
Arguably Mitchell's best studio recording since MINGUS, TAMING THE TIGER picks up where TURBULENT INDIGO left off, but there's a notable progression, both musical and lyrical. The biggest reason may be Mitchell's grasping of the production reins. Gone are the slick excesses of bassist Larry Klein's production. TAMING THE TIGER achieves a unity of vision, a fact that also owes to the arrangements' focus on Mitchell's own guitar and synthesizer work. The recurrent sonic texture here is an almost Zawinul-esque tapestry of electronic sounds; silvery synth and guitar-synth form an attractive latticework over which Mitchell lays her jazzy, unpredictable vocal melodies. Though she's grown a bit crankier as she's gotten older, when she lambasts contemporary pop culture (the title track) and attacks Victorian mores ("Face Lift") she doesn't come off as curmudgeonly as she did ...
