Boney James comes from somewhere over in the easy listening corner of jazz, with rhythms bordering on funk in one direction and soft soul in the other, with a lot of programmed drums (very well done) and deep, dark synth bass. Sometimes a male voice will venture out into the mix, but this isn't a particularly significant portion of the program -- just the right sort of sound for this kind of laid-back, late-night, easy listening material. James himself handles alto, tenor, and soprano sax duties with ease, playing relaxed, weaving lines throughout each cut and working with some decidedly pleasant arrangements. Seduction is smooth and self-assured, well-dressed, and fairly unremarkable. ~ Steven McDonald

Sensual music This is the first Boney James cd I purchased. His arrangements are awesome, his skill with the soulful saxophones even more so. Whenever Seduction is playing, I fall in love with my man all over again. It's the most sensual piece of music I have heard in a very, very long time. A "smooth jazz" home-run with an all-star cast... With the exception of the Hall and Oates and Bill Withers covers, this CD presents several new tunes worthy of being covered themselves. Boney James has delivered a variety of looks at his now-famous smooth-jazz/contemporary instrumental styling book. The one thing I really find refreshing about this CD, and James’ performance is that when he puts down his familiar tenor sax to switch off on alto or soprano, he doesn’t sound like Boney James playing a soprano sax, rather he has a unique soprano technique that leans toward Grover Washington on the balladesque “Seduction” and that isn’t a bad way to lean, yet his intonation is most excellent for this instrument which tosses him into more of a contemporary instrumental category rather than a jazz bin. His alto sound, if you haven’t heard it before, will leave you guessing, “Who’s that?” Because of his association with tenor sax, you might take quite a few guesses, including Jay Beckenstein, but there again you could do a lot worse than playing alto like JB. This CD showcases a marvelous composer of contemporary jazz instrumental songs and a superb performer. Call this genre of music what you will, for whatever you call it, it is easy to listen to and thoroughly enjoyable. Submitted by John (Manteca, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
