Mark Knopfler's debut non-soundtrack solo album, Golden Heart, was, in effect, the follow-up to the last Dire Straits studio album, On Every Street (1991). But it was also a compendium of the various musical endeavors in which Knopfler had engaged since emerging as a major figure in 1978. "Imelda" was cast in the mold of "Money for Nothing," with its trademark electric guitar riff and sardonic lyrics about Imelda Marcos, and other songs resembled Dire Straits songs, notably "Cannibals," which recalled "Walk of Life." But "A Night in Summer Long Ago" was presented in a Scots/Irish traditional folk style, complete with a lyric about a knight and a queen and would have fit nicely on Knopfler's soundtrack for The Princess Bride, and "Are We in Trouble Now" was a country ballad featuring pedal steel guitar and the piano playing of Nashville session ace Hargus "Pig" Robbins that would have been appropriate to Knopfler's duo album with Chet Atkins. ~ William Ruhlmann Mark Knopfler's debut non-soundtrack solo album, Golden Heart, was, in effect, the follow-up to the last Dire Straits studio album, On Every Street (1991). For all that, there was little on the album that was new or striking, and Knopfler seemed to fall back on familiar guitar techniques while intoning often obscure lyrics. You get the feeling that there was a story behind each song, but except in the cases of "Rudig Mark Knopfler Golden Heart Songs Golden Heart Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Mark's The Best I've been a huge Knopfler fan since The Dire Straits heyday, and in my opinion, this is his best work yet. The soulful sounds of Golden Heart tug you every which way, Cannibals gets me fired up for my triathlons, and Are We In Trouble Now is a must play at any wedding slow dance. I try not to play this album too much, for fear of getting "burned out", but it's tough, just want to listen over and over again. Submitted by Peter (Farmington, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Mark Knopfler does everything right Mark Knopfler's distinctive gravelly voice and bluesy guitar were the backbone of Dire Strait's sound. Since their breakup, he has taken each of his recordings in different directions. "Sailing to Philadelphia" has a pensive folk music style underlined by some of his collaborations on that recording, notably James Taylor. This earlier album from '96, is more varied and even better, using arrangements with Celtic instruments (Irish harp, Uillean pipes) on "Darling Pretty" and "Done With Bonaparte", and strong zydeco style on others--"Je Suis Desole" is a fabulous example. Mark K. doesn't write songs so much as mini historical documentaries. All this CD needs the fireplace and the glass of brandy. Submitted by a reviewer (Washington DC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Very Good I really like this album. It has the Dire Straits flavor to it although a little softer and less intense. I would recommend it for the Dire Straits fans as long as your not looking for the "Money for Nothing" type music and can accept a little more mature and softer versions of Dire Straits presentations. First solo album - excellent performance! Typical Mark Knopfler: Meaningful lyrics - speaks right to your heart - and unique guitar performances, which is the brand of Knopfler. With a touch of Ireland, this record is a must, not only for every Mark Knopfler fan. Buy it, listen to it and discover a new side of Dire Straits' lead guitarist. Simple and still so complex. Excellent performance.
