Along with Korn's 1994 self-titled debut album, the Deftones' 1995 debut, ADRENALINE, helped put California's new rage-filled metal movement on the map, subsequently inspiring countless other bands. Vocalist Chino Moreno was one of the first alternative/metal singers to specialize in the sing/scream style that would become prevalent by the late '90s, while guitarist Stephen Carpenter specialized in repetitive, mammoth guitar riffs that were comparable to both Black Sabbath and Soundgarden. While ADRENALINE wasn't a big hit right off the bat, constant touring over a period of several years helped set up the Deftones' eventual breakthrough success with the group's sophomore effort, AROUND THE FUR, two years later.
ADRENALINE proves to be a very consistent debut. Although the band would focus and perfect its sound even more on future releases, all of the major ingredients were already evident. The lead-off track, "Bored," remains one of the band's best anthems (and a concert favorite), while there are many other standouts throughout ("Root," "Minus Blindfold," "7 Words," "Birthmark," etc.). Renowned metal producer Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera) also gives the album an impressive sonic punch, easily making ADRENALINE one of the finest metal debuts of the '90s.

CMJ (2/21/00, p.24) - "...both beautiful and angry, rocking like a sailboat on stormy waters....also showing off the band's tender side, which stemmed from the creamy-soft, yearning vocals of Chico Moreno....the album has a gorgeous sound that has nothing in common with rapcore." Deftones Adrenaline Songs Adrenaline Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I Love the Deftones!!!!!! If your into hard head-bangin rock this album is for you. As album 1 of the deftones many, this album is somewhat repetitive, but you have to remeber it is thier first album. You can't very well appreciate anything after unless you've heard the where the band started. In my opinoin the album sort of feeds off the first track and kind of evolves as you go. If your a Deftones maniac and you've heard everything after this album than you definitely want to get this one to see where it all began. Then you'll know why the Tones are the great band they are today. Submitted by LIRCHJZ (St Louis, MO, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Adrenaline is the only word for this album. Technically the heaviest album to come Deftones, Adrenaline is all you need to drink beer to. As others have said this is where it all began and career wise this is true however, if you want to hear the VERY beginning of this amazing band get hold of the rare [Like] Linus Demo which really does take you back to the very beginning. This cd really ROCKS!!! I really love deftones. Even though this is their first cd, I think it is one of their best. Chino's vocals are out of this world and Stephen Carpenter's guitar style is hard. This cd has songs from fast pace and adrenaline pumping rhythm to melodic and moving sounds. I can't get enough of them. Adrenaline really Rocks!!!!! | | Tool Aenima CD (1996)
Adrenaline
$10.19 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly directed for maximum impact.
On songs like "Stinkfist," Keenan rails against injustice ...
| | Korn CD (1994)
Adrenaline
$7.59 "Shoots And Ladders" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
"Are you readyyyy?!" With that question--an inquiry that begins as a growl and ends as a scream--Jonathan Davis provides a fitting beginning to this searing collection of relentless, metallicized thrash/funk. His question is well-posed; this is not music for the faint of heart. Producer Ross Robinson and Korn have found a formula that works: start with a layer of fuzz-soaked guitar, add some big beats, and finish the whole construct off with a healthy dose of Davis's tortured vocals.
This is dark music, scary music. It's also occasionally funky music. "Ball Tongue," with its stop/start syncopation, tinny guitar whine, and stripped-down-to-the-bone verse, is a perfect encapsulation of the Korn style. The track also contains a trace of (gasp!) Hip-Hop flavor, but you won't be hearing this L.A. quartet on the dance floor any time soon. Their assault is severe, fueled with explosive bursts of guitar a la Metallica, as well as frenetic tempo changes reminiscent of Faith No More. The themes are frustration, ...
| | Deftones Around The Fur CD (1997)
Adrenaline
$9.69 AROUND THE FUR, the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive ADRENALINE, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening "My Own Summer (Shove It)," serves as an introduction to the album's ...
| | Deftones White Pony CD (2000) Added Track; New Version
Adrenaline
$10.79 "Elite" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
This version of WHITE PONY includes the track "Back To School (Mini Maggit)", formerly available as a link on an enhanced version of WHITE PONY.
The Deftones have always been known for walking a tightrope of extremes, from crunchy guitar riffing to gentle, melodically fleshed-out chords, with vocals ranging from a breathy hush to devilish bellowing, and some occasional hip-hop phrasing for good measure. With WHITE PONY, Deftones mastermind and vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno has brought the band to full gallop.
Somewhat inspired by the game show, "Feiticeira" recounts a chilling abduction from the first person perspective, while "Digital Bath" features moody verses and brutal choruses. "Elite" uses a vocal approach usually reserved ...
| | Deftones CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Adrenaline
$10.95 Since the '90s, the Deftones have clawed out their own specialized niche in music. Many have imitated them, but few have reached their heights. They were innovators of so-called nu metal and could easily have settled into complacency riding the wave they helped create. Instead they continue to make waves with their self-titled fourth album.
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno wastes no time in expressing his despair mere seconds into "Hexagram" with a blood-curdling scream that will make your skin crawl. The dense, down-tuned guitars of Stephen Carpenter form a solid backdrop for the vocals that's more about creating a mood than a melody ("When Girls Telephone Boys"). Ironically one of the album's most intense moments ("Lucky You") doesn't even involve guitar, it relies on Nine Inch ...
