Despite a few good moments -- like the rollicking "Clinging to You" -- 4 Aces is a bit too predictable of a good time from the Texas Tornados. Certainly, all of the ingredients that made their previous recordings delightful are present, but the problem is the album doesn't ever quite catch fire with the goofy fun that distinguished their best music. ~ Thom Owens Although 4 Aces is a bit too predictable of a good time from the Texas Tornados, all of the ingredients that made their previous recordings delightful are present. The rollicking "Clinging to You" is one of the album's good moments. ~ Thom Owens Working within the confines of a style as singular as Tex-Mex, one of the greatest difficulties is finding a way to keep the music sounding fresh. Year after year, the Texas Tornados manage to do just that, serving up spicy slabs of south-of-the-border soul. Their music brings together rock and roll, R&B, country and traditional Mexican folk music (represented in the norteno accordion of Flaco Jimenez and the stirring, romantic voice of Freddy Fender). On 4 ACES, the mutant charm of this musical hybrid is exemplified by the mysterious, Del Shannon-esque title cut, the country-flavored torch ballad "In My Mind" and the 6/8 New Orleans stroll of "Tell Me." On those and other tunes, the Tornados prove themselves adept at working endlessly appealing variations on the style that is their foundation.Rolling Stone (8/8/96, p.62) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...This time the Tornados have tilted their Tex-Mex balance more in the Mex direction, with gorgeous Spanish-language love songs sung by [Freddy] Fender..." Option (11-12/97, pp.133-134) - "Border radio tuned in by four geezers who actually remember border radio....produced by a man with a Midas touch who channels 'em into sonic gold....that such a band can make such breathtakingly gorgeous, emotional music for a major label in 1996 is astounding." 4 Aces Music | List Price | $9.98 (You save $0.59) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, World, International, Pop, Country, Spanish, Tejano, Tex-mex | | Label | Reprise | | Orig Year | 1996 | | All Time Sales Rank | 27826 | | CD Universe Part number | 1101652 | | Catalog number | 46197 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Jul 09, 1996 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Jim Dickinson | | Engineer | Stuart Sullivan | | Personnel | Flaco Jimenez - vocals, accordion Freddy Fender - vocals Augie Meyers - vocals, accordion, piano, Vox organ Doug Sahm - vocals, 6- and 12-string guitars, maracas

$6.09 1990 album from Reprise includes the hit '(Hey Baby) Que Paso'.
The Texas Tornados: Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers. Predictably, this debut album by a sort of Tex-Mex Traveling Wilburys is a delight. Forty percent of the Sir Douglas Quintet -- Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers -- is represented, along with Freddy Fender and accordionist Flaco Jimenez. The album reflects the differing strains that each brings to the music, from the more pop/country approach of Sahm and Meyers to Fender's bluesy singing and Jimenez's Mexican playing. An all-star project that brings out the best in its members, Texas Tornados is a landmark Tex-Mex album. (The track "Soy de San Luis" won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Performance.) ~ William Ruhlmann Doug Sahm started the '90s by launching the Texas Tornados--a sort of Tex-Mex supergroup. $9.55 Even if the Texas Tornados had picked a different name, it would be pretty hard to imagine them coming from anywhere besides the Lone Star State; their high-spirited mixture of Tex-Mex, norteño, garage rock, blues, and hardcore honky tonk flavors brands them as proud sons of a place all these sounds and more happily co-exist on a regular basis. Zone of Our Own, the second album from the all-star quartet of Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers, and Doug Sahm, isn't quite up to the same level as their superb self-titled debut, but it sure doesn't miss by much. Sahm gets to rave up on Sir Doug-style rockers like "I Ain't That Kat Anymore," Fender sings sad and soulful on "Oh Holy One," Jimenez burns up the squeeze box on "La Mucura," and Meyers gets to show off his bluesy side on "Did I Tell You." For all the sonic diversity of the Texas Tornados, Zone of Our Own still sounds like it's all of a piece, like the play list of some blessedly eclectic radio station beaming out along the border, as the four frontmen bounce off each other with joyous ...
