SONGBOOK was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group.
On SONGBOOK, which consists entirely of his own compositions, sax giant Kenny Garrett presents himself as a writer to be reckoned with. He and his band, comprised of pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Nat Reeves and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, are members of a generation of jazz musicians who've had access to a broad cross-section of living jazz artists and thorough recorded documentation of everything that came before them. It shows in their comprehensive mastery of their instruments and their knowledge of various genres related to jazz.
For Garrett, though there are still new avenues to be explored. An altoist who often explores the modal terrain generally frequented by tenor players, Garrett offers up gems like "Sing a Song of Song," a beautifully melodic and spiritual tune, with Jeff "Tain" Watts expertly updating Elvin Jones' swinging jazz-mambo style. The band comes out swinging on "2 Down & 1 Across," and Garrett turns out a lovely, melancholy ballad in "Before It's Time To Say Goodbye."

Down Beat (8/97, pp.53-54) - 4 1/2 stars (out of 5) - "This is powerhouse music, the state of the art....it's Garrett's finest hour, and it will play well for years and years....there's a splendidly wide breadth to these tunes..." JazzTimes (9/97, p.74) - "Garrett explores ten originals in this album. His alto saxophone sound is intense and passionate and suggests that Sonny Fortune may have been one of his models....His sidemen...are tough players who create a slashing rhythmic drive..." Very Good 90's Jazz Effort Worth it just for the late Kenny Kirkland on piano alone. Garrett also excels on sax, and the rhythm team of Reeves and Watts are first class. You also get excellent original compositions by Garrett - there is a lot of very good jazz out there from the 90's and 00's, but not a lot that features all original compositions by the band leader. This is fine stuff and worth your time and money. Submitted by Thelonious (Lawrence, KS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Get it Incredible cd!! Kenny Garreth has been with us for quite some time now. He is in my opinion one of the few really interesting sax players of his generation (with Joshua Redman maybe..).
His warm tone, his sense of melody. The band is superb. The late Kenny Kirkland is a true genius... Submitted by Jacco (Amsterdam, Holland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.

"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy ...

Songbook
$12.65 Talk To Me is the title of the latest album from Philipp Fankhauser, the highly regarded blues artist based in Thun, Switzerland, and his first for Memphis International Records. Fankhauser is well known to European audiences but he is also familiar to North Americans as a result of his role as guest vocalist with the band of the late blues great Johnny "Clyde" Copeland. While the bulk of Talk To Me is comprised of l Fankhauser originals it does include two Johnny Copeland compositions and Shemekia Copeland, Johnny's daughter and a renowned star in her own right, penned the liner notes. "Philipp will always be very special to the Copeland family; his music is special for just about everyone," she wrote. The album includes a version of "Members Only," a song that was an R&B hit for Bobby Bland in the 1980s and produced for Fankhauser by Dennis Walker (Robert Cray, B.B. ...
