| | Oliver Good Morning Starshine CD (2005) Remastered
Decade Of Hits
$12.79 Oliver's recording career covered a lot of ground, from the cosmic bubblegum of "Good Morning Starshine" to serious, socially conscious folk-pop and country-rock. His rendition of Rod McKuen's love-and-nature ballad "Jean" fit into yet another category altogether, and gave Oliver his biggest hit. As a result, this survey of Oliver's career reveals him to be a restless character reaching for artistic and professional direction after two defining but unrepresentative singles. Oliver's own compositions, ...

| | Allison Moorer Duel CD (2004)
Decade Of Hits
$14.69 Once upon a time, Allison Moorer was a country artist who sang for a major record label. It might be easy then, to see her switch to Sugar Hill as a back-to-the-basics move, a reconnection with her country roots. Moorer, however, isn't that predictable, and The Duel -- while many things -- isn't country. In fact, the opening cut -- "I Ain't Giving Up on You" -- sounds a lot like classic rock and most of the album follows this course. This is interesting, in that Moorer's a strong writer, and it would've been easy to fall back on a tasteful country-folk production and become a fairly typical singer/songwriter. Instead, Moorer's plucky vocals, along with Adam Landry's electric guitar work and R.S. Field's steady backbeat, turn a song like "Melancholy Polly" into an easy-rolling romp. Another factor that makes the songs on The Duel so effective is that Moorer, besides being good at penning ...
| | Kinky Friedman They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore CD (2005) (Import) Germany
Decade Of Hits
$25.05 The venerable Bear Family label from Germany begins its Kinky Friedman reissue series with the two-fer reissue of two of the Texas songwriter's recordings, Kinky Friedman released in 1974 on the ABC Dunhill label and Lasso from El Paso from Epic in 1976. These two offerings are the most essential of the infamous legend's songwriting gift and his outrageous personality. The former boasts the title track, "Rapid City, South Dakota," and the ribald "Homo Erectus." ...
| | Johnny Rodgers Box Of Photographs CD (2005)
Decade Of Hits
$13.35 With his clean-cut all-American looks, star-making moniker, James Taylor-lush voice, and résumé that includes shared stages with Paul McCartney, Liza Minnelli, Michael Feinstein, and Chrissie Hynde (in addition to starring off-Broadway in Our Sinatra), singer/songwriter and keyboardist Johnny Rodgers seemed destined for big things even before the release of his spectacular debut. But the real achievement of this glorious whirlwind of 12 original songs is the way it celebrates artistic independence in a world of cookie-cutter artists and hyper-restrictive ...
