Eric Clapton reached the peak of his popularity in the '90s, as the back-to-back number one albums Unplugged and From the Cradle combined for a total of over 13 million sales in the U.S. alone. One strange thing about Clapton's '90s success is that it relied almost entirely on covers and new versions of classic hits; he released no albums of new material between 1989's Journeyman and 1998's Pilgrim. In the decade between the two albums, he had two new hits -- his moving elegy to his deceased son, "Tears in Heaven," and the slick contemporary soul of the Babyface-written "Change the World" -- and Pilgrim tries to reach a middle ground between these two extremes, balancing tortured lyrics with smooth sonic surfaces. Working with producer Simon Climie, his collaborator on the TDF side project, Clapton has created a calm record. His singing is mannered, even on emotionally turbulent numbers like "My Father's Eyes" or "Circus," and he's content to take a back seat instrumentally, playing slight solos and fills. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine One strange thing about Eric Clapton's '90s success is that it relied almost entirely on covers and new versions of classic hits; he released no albums of new material between 1989's Journeyman and 1998's Pilgrim. Working with producer Simon Climie, his collaborator on the TDF side project, Clapton has created a numbingly calm record that, for all of its lyrical torment, displays no emotion whatsoever. Much of the problem lies in the production, which relies entirely on stiff mechanical drumbeats, gauzy synthesizers, and meandering instrumental interludes. These ingredients could result in a good record, as "Change the World" demonstrated, but not here, due to Pilgrim's monotonous production. Unfortunately, Clapton doesn't want to shake things up -- his singing is startlingly mannered, even on emotionally turbulent numbers like "My Father's Eyes" or "Circus." Even worse, he's content to take a back seat instrumentally, playing slight solos and fills as colorless as the electronic backdrops. The deadened sonics would make Pilgrim a chore even if there were strong songs on theRolling Stone (3/19/98, pp.63-64) - 4 Stars (out of 5) - "...Clapton's most ambitious, introspective work since his days with the legendary, lacerating Derek and the Dominos....incorporates old-school R&B, orchestral maneuvers and dashes of (gulp!) electronica..." Clapton's Wide Scope Sorry to read about the folks that didn't get what Clapton was creating with "Pilgrim", that's Pilgrim people!
He has moved away from the Cocaine pop stuff and has grown up, sorry folks!
From the opening of "My Father Eye's" and "River of Tears" to the soulful echoing of Curtis Mayfield. Clapton's guitar playing throughout, show skill beyond measure and the ability to transend emoition through a Fender stat straight to our hearts and minds.
Give this GREAT recording a chance to both win you over and blow your mind! Submitted by stephenswhitman (SLC UT) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Clapton's Most Ambitious Work "Pilgrim" is Eric Clapton's darkest and most personal album. It's also very different from just about anything else he's ever done. I also consider it one of his very best. However, it's been considered by most fans and critics alike to be Clapton's nadir. Sure, it may be unsettling to hear the electronic, dated production combined with Eric Clapton's guitar playing, and his playing is buried on some of the tracks, but it's very refreshing and relaxing to listen to. Clapton's most devoted fans will probably be the main ones to understand and appreciate this album. Sure, there are some fiery up tempo rockers, such as "Sick And Tired" and "She's Gone". He also plays some smooth acoustic guitar on numbers like the bluesy "Fall Like Rain", the hit single "My Father's Eyes" and the tear-jerking but beautiful "Circus". "Broken Hearted" is another amazing tear-jerking ballad and among one of my most favorites on the album. Aside from a couple of bland and clumsy sounding tracks like "One Chance" and "Inside Of Me", "Pilgrim" is definately a dark and ambitious Clapton work and it didn't deserve to be considered a complete turkey. $7.09 All tracks have been digitally remastered. Contains 16 tracks. Also known as In A Can, out of deference to its distinctive packaging, this deeply posthumous set collects together 16 outtakes and alternates covering the first flowering of the Ruts -- truly one of the finest of all Britain's post-punk reggae/Oi! fusionists. The furious "Babylon's Burning," present here in four starkly different versions, is only one of a clutch of period classics in the band's arsenal and In A Rut's biggest failing is its refusal to address the rest. No "Jah Wars," no "West One," and only a perfunctory "Something That ...
