Faith No More: Mike Patton (vocals); Jon Hudson (guitar); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Billy Gould (bass); Mike Bordin (drums). Producers: Roli Mosimann, Billy Gould, Faith No More. Engineers: Daniel Presley, Michael Bogus, Atom. Recorded at Razor's Edge and Brilliant Studios, San Francisco, California. Personnel: Mike Patton (vocals); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Bill Gould (bass guitar); Mike Bordin (drums). Audio Mixer: Roli Mosimann. Recording information: Brilliant Studios, San Francisco, CA. Faith No More's 1997 release Album of the Year featured the talents of another new guitarist, Jon Hudson, who replaced Dean Menta (Menta only toured with the group in support of King for a Day before being dismissed). Like King for a Day, Album is more straightforward musically than past releases and remains one of FNM's most focused and concise works. Recorded in bassist Billy Gould's home studio, Album of the Year would turn out to be their last studio recording before splitting up in 1997. A trio of outstanding tracks -- "Stripsearch," "Last Cup of Sorrow," and "Ashes to Ashes" -- blend hard rock and pop melodicism the way only FNM can, while "Helpless" is an unpredictable composition that alternates between heavy guitar riffing and Mike Patton's tempered vocals. The explosive album opener, "Collision," and "Naked in Front of the Computer" show that the band can still compose prime heavy rockers, while other musical forms were included as well (the romantic ballad "She Loves Me Not," the evil boogie of "Home Sick Home," and the Middle Eastern sounds of "Mouth to Mouth"). For the gripping album closer, "Pristina," the '90s turmoil in Yugoslavia is used as a backdrop for a tale of lovers being separated due to war. Album of the Year was a fitting way for one of alt-rock's most influential and important bands to end its career. ~ Greg Prato ALBUM OF THE YEAR is Faith No More's sixth full-length release. It demonstrates the same kind of straight-ahead approach as its predecessor, KING FOR A DAY, but also contains plenty of surprises. The album was recorded entirely at bassist Billy Gould's home studio, and contains the highlights "Collision," "Stripsearch," "Last Cup of Sorrow," "Naked in Front of the Computer," and "Helpless." Despite the emergence of numerous up-and-coming bands that were mentioning FNM as an important influence, the bandmembers amicably went their separate ways upon the completion of their 1997-98 tour.
Spin (8/97, pp.114-115) - 7 (out of 10) - "...This is one of the few rock'n'roll bands that can drive through a soul-flavored song without sounding either sappy or mannered....In 1997, Faith No More may be to aging alt-rock dudes what Jefferson Starship were to those same dudes' parents. Fetch me the Geritol, honey...it's time to dance." Entertainment Weekly (6/20/97, p.75) - "...tempers Mike Patton's he-man vocals and a wall of punk-funk metal with tracks that bring down the noise..." - Ratinga: B Melody Maker (6/14/97, p.52) - "...As a rebirth, ALBUM OF THE YEAR is the best FNM could've done. And FNM's best is pretty...awesome." NME (Magazine) (5/31/97, p.55) - "...ALBUM OF THE YEAR is a stepladder slamdunk return to form, encompassing all of FNM's Bullworker-mangling strengths in 12 fizzy tracks....Magic. Wouldn't want to French kiss them, but for once the tongue-in-cheek title is review in itself." Album Of The Year Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Also Amazing... As FNM's last album (*Sniff*), it is both frustrating and gratifying. It has the best FNM song, "Stripsearch," but doesn't contain the usual plethora of hits. The album still doesn't have a bad song (I've always said that even the worst Mike Patton song is better than anything in the Top 40) but it just never grabbed me like the previous albums. Tracks like "Collision," "Last Cup of Sorrow," "Mouth to Mouth," and "Ashes to Ashes" are tremendous and, despite my previous caveats, "Album of the Year" is definitely worth the price of admission. stylish band with awesome singer this band just kept better after getting rid of their original guitarist, they are incredible musicians. the band is really a heavy bass, keyboard and vocalist band, even though they have great guitarists as well, it is these three members that are the songwriters of this band, mike patton can sing in all different styles and pull it off fantastically, on this album they have become a real classy act to follow, too bad this was there last, ashes to ashes is just incredible, stripsearch is the same. and last cup of sorrow, this band has amazing songwriting talent, just don't ever go without this album, probably there best after king for a day, Submitted by halenroth84 (thunder bay, ontario. canada) Was This Review Helpful? What a way to sign off! Faith No More is the greatest band of our age.
The appropriately titled "Album of the Year" is just that. "Stripsearch" is one of the greatest songs ever, period. So is "Pristina", the closer of this CD. The rest of it ain't bad either! Any true music lover should have this in their collection. Submitted by Reginald Pither (east coast, usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

It should have been Album of thE Year Faith No More without a doubt are one of the many gods of music because no one sounds like them and could never try to even immitate there godlike superiority over eveything else ever. They have incredible range they can be funk at one time, then Metal and alot of other stuff, but i really wished that they wouldnt have broken up after this album because they could have went on for another twenty years releasing great albums, i think the standout tracks on this album are "Collision", "Stripsearch", "Last Cup Of Sorrow", Mouth To Mouth", "Ashes To Ashes", and "Home Sick Home" what the hell am i talking about cause every song on this albums great. buy it immediatly Submitted by twinkie_rameriez (richmond. ky) Was This Review Helpful? Faith No More: Michael Patton (vocals); Jim Martin (guitar); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Bill Gould (bass); Mike Bordin (drums). Engineers: Matt Wallace, Jim "Watts" Vereecke, Craig Doubet. Starting with the careening "From Out of Nowhere," driven by Bottum's doomy, energetic keyboards, Faith No More rebounded excellently on The Real Thing after Mosley's firing. Given that the band had nearly finished recording the music and Patton was a last minute recruit, he adjusts to the proceedings well. His insane, wide-ranging musical interests ...

A striking mix of radical and traditional, raw emotion and literate expression, hip-hop and vocal pop, Nellie McKay's Get Away from Me is the kind of feverishly inventive, sprawling album that only comes from young artists. Though it could've easily fit onto a single CD, it's a double-disc set designed to reclaim the feeling of flipping over a record; the back cover proclaims that McKay "is a proud member of PETA."
