Paul Brandt sings straight-up American country music, with lots of heart, spirit, and a strong rockin' feel. He's emerged over the past few years as a strong presence in Nashville, after his debut disc CALM BEFORE THE STORM went gold. Brandt also won the title of Billboard's best-selling new male artist of 1996, and this disc bears witness to his abilities. "Chain Reaction" is a catchy little rocker, with Brandt stretching out his strong country baritone, while the band picks it up with plenty of juke-joint Saturday-night style. But Brandt also has a feel for the slower, more introspective tunes, and "A Little in Love" slows down the pace to good effect, with pure country harmonies on the chorus, a lilting fiddle in the background. OUTSIDE THE FRAME is a strong effort from a country artist who's here to stay.

| | George Strait Strait Country (1st LP) CD (1981)
Outside The Frame album
$5.19 Given George Strait's stature and his enduring popularity, it's easy to forget just how startling his debut Strait Country was in 1981. At the time, country music was given over to lush country-pop crossovers, aging outlaws, urban cowboy swagger and the emergence of Alabama-styled country-rock, all sounds that evoked the dawn of the Reagan era (and still do to this day), but Strait flew in the face of all of these trends, drawing deep on honky tonk tradition, undeniably rooted in Texas but willing to wander outside of the Lone Star State's borders. This restlessness manifested itself most notably on Strait's clear love of Merle Haggard, evident on the warm, breezy "Blame It on Mexico" whose verses could have been lifted from Hag's early-'70s efforts, but this wasn't a tune that was stuck in the past: this, along with the Top Ten hit "If You're Wanting a Stranger (There's One Coming Home)," ...
