What looked at first like a premature marketing ploy -- a greatest-hits collection after only three albums? -- now makes some historical sense, for founding member Lee Ritenour left the quartet not long after the CD's release. So this is in essence a summary of Fourplay's first edition, a collection of mildly funky, ethereally voiced selections from Fourplay, Between the Sheets, and Elixir, where Ritenour, Bob James, Nathan East, and Harvey Mason integrate their personalities into a smoothly homogenized whole. To sweeten the pot for the hardcore fans, Fourplay recorded three new tracks for the album -- Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" with vocals by Take 6, "4 Play and Pleasure," and "Any Time of Day" -- all fairly uneventful. The musicianship is impeccable, the production velvety, and despite the suitable-for-lovemaking-and-commuting stamp of approval, one wishes that these fine players would just cut loose and really rip once in a while. ~ Richard S. Best Of Fourplay
$20.25 In the liner notes for her debut album, Lynda Jamison follows the usual practice of listing everyone she wants to thank for helping get into a recording studio, and the list is lengthy. But the one who did her the biggest favor was Rosemary Clooney, who introduced her to her Clooney's longtime musical director, John Oddo. His arrangements and pianism are what go a long way to making the singer's inaugural effort ...

| | Hot Vegas Migration CD (2007)
Best Of Fourplay
$10.15 A wise man once said “we must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey.” hot vegas, a four piece rock band out of Charlotte, North Carolina, seem to have done just that on their first full length album, Migration. The word migration is defined as an unwillingness to permanently settle in one location. After releasing their EP, This One's For Desire, in early 2005, Andrew X (vocals/guitar), Alex Stewart (guitar), Daniel Henderson (bass) and Austin Eller (drums) embarked on a musical expedition with no specific destination in mind. “The music we make is just what comes out,” says Austin. “We just play what we feel.” The result is an emotionally charged and commercially appealing sound that many have referred to as “a breath of fresh air.” The songs on Migration not only possess genuine sincerity, but also a refreshing originality that dares to challenge an industry in which cookie cutter is the norm. “Most of the songs on Migration are about our own personal experiences,” concedes Andrew. “I think it would be very unfair to pick just one song off the record that defines us because they all define us. We created all of them.” hot vegas has been likened to some of the most innovative bands of all time. Recently referred to as “what Coldplay could sound like with balls” by Emotional Punk Magazine, their soaring melodies and inspired vocals are most comparable to the iconic sound and feel of U2. Although some elements of their musical influences can be heard in their songs, hot vegas effortlessly manages to create a signature style that is representative of who they are and what they stand for as a band. “We are definitely influenced by other artists,” explains Alex, “but I think too many bands end ...
| | Peter Bursch Broselmaschine CD (1971)
Best Of Fourplay
$19.09 Languorous atmospheres, lovely vocals, iridescent melodies, and shimmering solos combine on Bröselmaschine's self-titled 1971 debut album, the apotheosis of the German folk-prog scene. The quintet took their cue from England's Canterbury scene and even a traditional folk song, "Lassie," from that green and pleasant land. The band's signature sound ...

Personnel: Andy Tillison (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, Moog synthesizer); Guy Manning (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Theo Travis (vocals, flute, alto flute, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Sam Baine (vocals, piano, synthesizer); Krister Jonsson (electric guitar); Jonas Reingold (bass guitar); Jaime Salazar (drums). Additional personnel: Dan Watts (electric guitar). Recording information: Burnside, Leeds, England (01/2005-09/2005); England (01/2005-09/2005); France (01/2005-09/2005); MBL Studios, Aveyron, France (01/2005-09/2005); Paper Street, Wetherby, England (01/2005-09/2005); Reingold Studio, Malmo, Sweden (01/2005-09/2005); Sweden (01/2005-09/2005). The release of the Tangent's third album was preceded by a strong buzz -- the record label was probably desperate to draw attention away from the fact that one of the group's lead figures, Roine Stolt, had parted ways with Andy Tillison. If the strategy worked, then all the best, because A Place in the Queue actually is the group's strongest effort to date and a ...
